Press releases: who needs 'em

Post by bennie »

I said a while ago to take press releases - and press conferences - with a massive pinch of salt. You are being told what the promoter wants you to hear in such circumstances. Look at one of the lines in this release for example. It makes you cringe to read such immodesty from a promotional outfit:

Indeed bennie, as we have said before. They are useful for quotes but you have to check the points made re fights and omit most of the self-promotion otherwise it isn't really a valid news story.

See BBN's take on it.

I agree, more people should use the quotes as the basis for a story, rather than just print the entire press release verbatim, it's very lazy journalism in my book. It's ok if you're fightnews, and all you want to do is print the news, otherwise you're showing yourself up.

"Britain's most dynamic promotional company..."
Such a statment is an insult just prior to a WBC title fight being staged in this country.
