Swinton"Sweet Sue"Brown(Jim Brown's father)

Post by Brutu »

I was reading a biography of the great football running back Jim Brown.
In it said that his father ,Swinton Brown was at one time a professional boxer.
Another source says that he was a small time boxer who mostly fought in and around in Georgia.
It also said he played football at Brunswick Georgia and was an itineraet farmer
at St. Simons Island Georgia were Jim Brown was born.
The book mentioned that Swinton Brown was 6 ft 2 inches tall and 225 lbs.
Does anyone have any info on his reported professional boxing record?
Maybe he fought under an alias.

That might be a tough one. Maybe newspapers around Brunswick, Georgia would report black cards, assuming he fought beyond battle royals. Even then it's possible that he boxed under a pseudonym.

Jim Brown was born in 1936,so one would guess his father
had fought professionally in the late 1920's/early 1930's.
Maybe if we check the ring records of all the Black heavyweights and maybe light heavyweights too,
who had fought out of Georgia during that time period.
There may be two degree's of separation from someone we have heard of.

He could have been fighting as Battling Brown, KO Brown, or using some other even more vague pseudonym. Black boxing in the south can be a headache for record compiling.

There was a "Big Boy Brown" who fought Brad Simmons twice in the early 1920's in Oklahoma.
