Monzon vs Calzaghe

Post by BoxBuzz »

A mere middleweight....steps up to face the "greatest SUPER middleweight of ALL TIME".

Just stirrin' up some conversation here. Wonderin what the opinions might be.

I'd expect Calzaghe to take an early lead. But without ruffling or hurting Monzon. Carlos's long lazy right would follow the pecking left and slowly he'd peg it back. Monzon would trade at some point and his blows would take more out of Joe. The right hand might score a KD. I'd expect both men to be standing at the end. Monzon to win a close decision.

I think that's a good assessment for the most part, though I'd have Joe adapting a bit more and winning the close decision.

The idea of Joe Calzaghe beating Carlos Monzon.....well,..... it scandalizes this writer's intellect.

But I did ask for opinions. And I do honor diversity.

But it seems as odd as someone trying to convince me that the moon is somehow populated with primates.

Did Monzon ever beat a) a super middle? Or b) anyone with Calzaghe's style and work rate? No, of course he didn't. Joe by clear decision.

I'm not saying Monzon wouldn't win, but I've seen more than a few of my fellow Americans underrate Calzaghe, who in his prime was very fast southpaw, with a solid chin, boundless stamina and a hyper active work rate.

If in doubt with point a Rover, there's still point b.

Well then in your mind consider that actually Monzon at his peak operated at a lighter weight class than Calzaghe. It's not the biggest reason why Calzaghe would hand his ass to him, but it's another disadvantage.

And if Calzaghe had fought in that era, that class wouldn't have existed.

Makes this thread pretty irrelevant then. I thought Monzon was coming up in time to challenge a peak Calzaghe.

You asked if Monzon fought a usuper middle. He couldn't have.
There was no cruiser division during Rocky's reign, either.

Nah no disrespect to Joe, good fighter. I simply happen to think that Monzon half kills him in a fight. Now go home you Italian Taff :D

Wouldn't it make more sense though to ask if he ever beat a light heavyweight, or hell, even a small heavy? Considering that Joe wasn't coming into the ring at the 168 limit, or even the 175 limit necessarily.

That influenced my earlier post, as well as the speed and output mentioned.

This.....even if it's not a KO win. Monzon was happy to fight, and I don't think he had a problem with beating someone for the entire distance. The way Monzon liked to fight, when he KO'd someone, it might just be a dissapointment to his way of thinking.

Asking about light heavies is one thing, considering that division was around.
