Reasons why Broner won't last at the top.
Reasons why Broner won't last at the top.
1) He will not be able to control his weight.
2) Not tall enough to move past Welter ( He is 5ft 6).
3) His dad.......Adrien will follow his size/shape.
4) Most importantly, he is not that special.
Your reasons for and against?

He isn't particularly special and lacks dedication.

Just summed up what I said in 4 points. I should have just said what you did.expe wrote:He isn't particularly special and lacks dedication.
Re: Reasons why Broner won't last at the top.
He's just not that good, the evidence is in the Malignagi fight. When he takes on the real elite in any weight class he will lose IMO.
Re: Reasons why Broner won't last at the top.
He tends to give away the early rounds. I think he is possibly capable of raising his game should he feel the need to (if Paulie punched harder, say) but I don't think he's elite and never have. That said, the US press are always looking anoint the next big name so he's being groomed for that.
I think it says something that a guy can win world titles at 3 weights and be considered a bit of a failure by some.

Define 'at the top'.
Broner is definitely a talent, he probably won't be the next FMJ, but you'd have to have insanely high expectations to expect that.
The problem with Broner is that the guy is such a dickhead. He's aping Mayweather's cultivated personality, which'll only hold water if he remains undefeated. If he starts to believe all this shit, or he actually is the dickhead he acts, the first time he loses he may well disappear.

Sh!t workrate. He was outworked by Malignaggi at times. He won't have the power against the top 140 or 147 fighters he's had at the lower weights. He definitely believes his own hype but he's a total prick.

According to him he is 'taking over boxing' once Floyd leaves the game.L.C wrote:Define 'at the top'.

He's good, and at 23, he has plenty of potential to develop. He might stagnate where he is, or he might go on to be a genuine superstar. We're saying he won't because he's such a tool that we want him to fail.
Re: Reasons why Broner won't last at the top.
I don't actually want him to fail, just think he is lacking the mental strength to stay dedicated.SamWise72 wrote:He's good, and at 23, he has plenty of potential to develop. 5 kids at 23 suggests a bit reckless?

The reason he won't last at the top, he's simply not good enough. He's a fantastic athlete, amazing speed and power but his boxing is simply too limited to take him far for too long.
Whilst people will say "Oh but he can improve", that requires several things-a belief that you need to improve, a willingness to listen and learn and the combination of ambition and dedication. I think he lacks most of those.

Re: Reasons why Broner won't last at the top.
he is good enough, IF he can stay at lightweight, which he can't, because he's a growing young lad, doesn't seem dedicated with his weight anyway and I feel he'll be another guzman. when guzman got older just look at his weight problems, and how unimpressive he was in terms of both power and workrate at the higher weights.
I think there's a naz-level arrogance about him, where delusions will take over, he'll just do what he wants, he'll go in the wrong direction (naz focusing only on power; broner with his pastiche of mayweather) and things will just stop going his way, and he'll be mentally unprepared for it.
I think he'd have beaten burns, but that burns will still be a world champion, when broner is done for. I think broner will end up being a fad.

He's no Naz in any way. I always felt Nas' verbal attitude was just slightly tongue in cheek, whereas with Broner, the delivery doesn't really work.
Two things for me stood out in the Mag fight were a lack of work rate and how heavy he was breathing between rounds.

Give it two years and Broner will be out the game.
Him and his dad will live in Krispe Kreme.

Re: Reasons why Broner won't last at the top.
He is listed as being about 5ft8. Personally I think the guy is pretty special. He has got handspeed, good power and footwork and he can cut the ring down. He is not a KO artist but he is a good finisher when he has got his opponent in trouble see the Litzau and DiMarco fights. There are times where he does come over as a bit of a muppet and I reckon he come unstuck against some like Frankie Gavin who I think is a more complete fighter than he is.daviddee wrote:He's not 5ft 6???

i didn't compare the way he fights to naz. only the way his arroganace and delusions prevent him from fighting in the appropriate style (the apt style of course being different for both).Matchfixer wrote:He's no Naz in any way. Paulie is taller.

I know Boxrec is not accurate always, but it's listed all over.
Re: Reasons why Broner won't last at the top.
If he retired tomorrow he has achieved greatly already .the amount of titles there are out there makes it easier for fighters to become multiple weight champions without getting in line.
I think trying to walk down the same tracks as mayweather is fatal! That will be broners undoing floyd is up with the top 5 of alltime

Agree, the moment he is hurt in a fight what will he do? Copy Floyd? There is only one fighter on the level if Floyd and his name is Floyd. Broner is going for the snatch and grab as much cash as possible before his ass gets too fat.

Re: Reasons why Broner won't last at the top.
Broner has positives and negatives going for him. Overall and depite the level of opposition he has faced, he has done pretty well for a 23 year old fighter. He has faced some tough but not particularly gifted fighters and yet has won three world title belts at three different weights. Some would say as Paulie suggested, that Haymon is the reason for that and he is being neatly packaged and managed by the media to try and generate some big money fights in the future. Being able to move up two weights and secure a world title fight against Malignaggi perhaps proves this theory. However, you still have to have talent to win three titles at three seperate weight classes by the time you are 23 years of age.
Broner's main weaknesses are his work rate, stance and punch output. He needs to shorten the stance so he doesn't get hit with jabs and straight right hands as much. This will give him more flexability, rather than relying on reflexes. His work rate is terrible. He doesn't come into a fight until the 3rd or 4th rounds of a fight. He also tends to be a single shot fighter and he needs to be able to put three an four punch combinations together. He also sticks behind that Philly defence, which is fine if your opponent is coming on to you with combination shots, but for offense, he needs to change it to a high hands style which will give him more options. He also needs to work more behind the jab, as the more effective work comes when he does this in a any fight.
Broner does have weight issues. I think he needs to be more disciplined and whilst he perhaps naturally out grew the lightweight division, i couldn't see why he completely skipped the 140lbs division, which at the moment is perhaps the best division for him to compete in. I think that Broner fights the way he does because he expects to stop most of his opponents. It remains to be seen whether he can carry his power up to the 147lbs division because Paulie has always had a great chin and was stopped by Khan and Hatton whilst still on his feet. I don't think he will carry as much power at 147lbs, so i think he will need to stop relying on expected stoppages and alter his style accordingly. If he had upped his work rate by 25% against Paulie, he would have been out of sight in that fight and it wouldn't have gone to a split decision.
Expectations are high with Broner and with the abrasive personality he has, people are almost willing him to fail. He came up two weights to face Paulie at 23 years of age and yet some people talk as if he was hopeless and lost the fight. He won that fight for me by four or five rounds, but people expected or wanted the stoppage as vindication of his talent. That isn't going to happen every time and not when you go up two weights to face a durable veteran like Paulie. I think he has good speed and accuracy, carries some power and has a good defence, but he needs to be more adaptable in fights with regards to the comments made above. He is a special fighter, but he isn't a mayweather. Floyd is something you get every 50 years or something, the guy is unique. Broner will be a top fighter, but as for how far he can go, time will only tell that story.
