Randolph Turpin Vs the wrestler Big Daddy.
Randolph Turpin Vs the wrestler Big Daddy.
A friend a few years ago told me a story that toward the end of Turpins career he fought the popular Britsish Wrestler Big Daddy in a Boxer Vs Wrestler bout.
My friend was at the fight and this is what he said happened.
Turpin came out and landed a punch to the mouth of the near 300lbs wrestler which sent blood spraying everywhere. The wrestler was hurt and staggered but managed to grap hold of Turpin and got the Boxer in a 'Bear Hug'. Turpin then headbutted the wrestler which spilt yet more blood but the wrestler contined to crush the Boxer in his huge arms, eventually Turpin had the air crushed out of him and the much bigger and stronger Wrestler was declared the winner.
My friend who's twice my age always said that if Turpin had managed to land a couple of more punches early on he would have KO'd Big Daddy who's face was a mess at the end of the bout.
Has anybody else read or have anymore info on this bout?

Not sure that this happend? Turpin is alot older than the late Shirley Crabtree.
I know Turpin had a lot of time for the British Wrestlers and they used to help him out in the training. There was a Welsh documentary on Turpin a few years ago because where the most famous Welsh wrestler "El Ban Dito" said he and Turpin were good friends and "El Ban Dito" discussed Turpin training regime with the wrestling.
So it is possible, I just don't think it was with the Daddy, who lets face it wasn't the best ever Wrestler and only reason he was so popular cause his Brother ran the British wrestling scene in the 1980's.

Highly unlikely they ever faced each other in a wrestling ring.
Turpin died around 1965 or 66.
Shirley Crabtree didn't adopt the Big Daddy persona till around the mid 1970's. Though he did wrestle under his birth name previously.
I've always been under the impression that Crabtree had been out of the wrestling ring for many years before he came back as Big Daddy also.
Having said all this, I'm no expert though. I just grew up watching the Wrestling on World of Sport on a Saturday afternoon in the 60's and 70's.
One thing is for sure though, if they did meet it was Turpin vs Crabtree, NOT Turpin vs Big Daddy.

Not sure if there is that much difference in age, Turpin would be around 76 if still alive. Ok this is a rough guess but wouldn't Crabtree be about 65/66 if still alive? that's only around 10 years.stujones wrote:Not sure that this happend? Turpin is alot older than the late Shirley Crabtree. .
This bout took place at the end of Turpins career when I have read he took part in a number of Boxer Vs Wrestler contest, at least to my understanding.
And sorry I should have stated during this alleged bout the name Big Daddy wasn't used. My friend who told me the story said that Crabtree looked very young but was still a HUGE bloke.
Maybe my friend has got the wrong Wrestler but hes pretty reliable on these things, both his cousins boxed Amatuer, Pro and bareknuckle and he used to hang aroung the Midland Boxing scene in the 60's. Even sparred with Ron Gray a few times.

Randy and Dick had a brother Jackie who fought at Lightweigh and maybe Featherweight.Collins2000 wrote:Wasn't there a Jackie Turpin who wrestled in the 60's? I seem to recall he was supposedly Randolph's nephew. I'd suspect it was more likely to have been this fellow who wrestled Crabtree.
There is also this Jackie Turpin

Who I think maybe Randolphs nephew, who was a Welterweight, no idea if he ever Wrestled,.

sounds like a dodgy plumber!!the most famous Welsh wrestler "El Ban Dito" said he and Turpin were good friends and "El Ban Dito" discussed Turpin training regime with the wrestling.
In all seriousnes Orig Williams (or dodgy plumber) lives very close to me and writes an article for the newspaper my mother is one of the managers of. not too keen on the guy personally, always found him a bit of a bully. he must only be what... 60odd (max) now...
Re: ha ha
What does he discuss in the articles? Wrestling? I remember him as a kid (so he was probably in his fifties) it was funny, he always won against these athletic, bigger, younger wrestlers - not realistic.Wales wrote:sounds like a dodgy plumber!!the most famous Welsh wrestler "El Ban Dito" said he and Turpin were good friends and "El Ban Dito" discussed Turpin training regime with the wrestling.
