Questions about getting started
I've been considering getting into boxing for a while now and was just looking for some more info from people who might have been in the same situation. I don't have any great aspirations or anything, but I would like to be competitive and do the best I could. How do you get started in amateur boxing? Are their different skill levels to compete in? What kind of money does it take? And, how long do most people train before having their first competitive fight? Any other info or opinions you have go ahead and throw them in too. Thanks for anyone who helps me out with these questions
There are novice divisions and open class -more than 10 fights- in amateur boxing.
My suggestion to you is to find out if your county park system sponsors amateur gyms -some cities like Chicago and Dade County in Miami have excellent park programs. Another possible training opportunity is in the Police Athletic League gyms.
If you live in a city without boxing you might consider posting ads on the boxing bulletin boards and you might find experienced former boxers within driving distance that you can get together with and form a boxing or sparring club. Cost is cheap compared to other sports. A few hundred dollars worth of equipment will last you for quite a long time and boxing gym dues are more reasonable than high chromed gyms.
Tapes are fine to understand basics but you need someone to be there and teach you properly. Good luck.
