David Price vs Oliver McCall next???

Post by fightscorecollector »

Would this fight make sense for Price next??? here are my reasons why i think somebody like Oliver McCall would be a great comeback opponent for David Price.

* McCall's chin is still rock solid - Price will be forced to go the full 10 rounds here where his stamina will be tested. Mentally doing the 10 rounds should do him wonders after gassing after 3 vs Thomson.

*Price will have 10 rounds to work on his technique eg: keeping an aggressive guy away with his jab and being able to move around the ring against a slower opponent.

*McCall still has a "name" if he comes to the UK, the history with Lennox Lewis will also help sell the fight.

*McCall is still dangerous at 48, there is no point getting guys who will last 2-3 Rounds vs Price, McCall will be in the fight until the last bell.

If McCall is not the guy then Price needs to fight durable guys, as i have already mentioned, there is no point in Price blasting somebody out. He needs to work on the things that let him down so badly vs Thompson - Stamina, his jab and his movement. McCall gives him this for 10 rounds and is at 48 a live opponent.

Would you bet against McCall to land a big shot after the Thompson-Price 2 fight???? i certainly wouldnt. Lewis also knows a lot about McCall, what better man to train him for the fight???

Thoughts please on the above, AND if no McCall, who should Price fight and why??

cheers

McCall could win this without throwing a punch going on last Saturdays performance.

If they're good enough.

I think McCall might be too good to be Price's next opponent, but if he fights him after a few easier fights then I think he would be a good opponent.

Horse thats something i dont think Price needs just now...easy fights that lead to early Ko's.

I can see why a confidence builder helps him though mate.

If he beats McCall which i think is no certainty then i think he gains far more confidence going the 10 rounds with McCall rather than the easy wins. Price will know he can do the 10 rounds. He already knows he has a big punch.

There's safer journeymen out there. Michael Sprott for example.

Sprott a good shout.

Would give Price the opportunity to win the Lonsdale outright, which would be a good short term goal before progressing further.

Then perhaps start targeting mid-level Europeans.

He might actually prefer going up against Euro boxers rather than more improvising, unpredictable fighters like Thompson.

Sprott to win the Lonsdale outright (still a nice achievement even if he's fallen short of world level) then perhaps some decent Euro's like Dimitrenko, Pianeta or Gerber before a shot at the EBU title (hopefully Pulev will have vacated by then)

I remember Sprott realising too late that he could beat Ustinov and embarrassing the huge lummox for the last few rounds of their fight. For that reason i think he might be a bit too savvy if he comes in with decent condition and in the right mood.

I can't see a fight where Price bounces his best shots of a slowly advancing McCall for round after round could possibly end well. Maybe Oliver couldn't land all those shots on a knackered Price that Thompson did but he has bigger one punch power and i can easily imagine a multiple KD mercy stoppage.

I think they should forget the over 40's club and look for younger fighters who don't have a big experience advantage who Price is capable of beating tactically. I hesitate to say Towers but i'd pick him over McCall.

Next opponent is bound to be a total no hoper. In some ways the smart way may to bring him back against someone he's already beaten.

Better than another loss. The Thompson performance was pretty shambolic.

McCall! Good god no. A guy he has no chance of KayOing and every chance of being sparked. After Price had shot his bolt trying to get Olly out there he would gas and be there for the taking. Price realistically need opponents he has a high chance of knocking out and preferably early. Might sound harsh but really looking at his last 2 fights unless he can dramaticlly change his engine (whether it be through a sports psychologist to help with all his "nerves" or a totally different fitness/conditiong routine) he will be in danger of getting stopped after 3 rounds and that's without even considering his questionable chin. He definitely needs a confidence booster and another British level fight although non of those will be easy now.

He needs to get rid of Franny Smith and Lennox Lewis.

Sprott gave Helenius a pretty rough ride! That would be a tough fight for a comeback fight after the back to back losses.

Also, change his entrance music from 'You'll never walk alone' to the theme from 'Brookside'.

McCall can still hit. He struggles with movers now but a huge man who gasses? I can't imagine a finer choice of opponent for McCall, if I was trying to bag him one last payday before he turns 50.

:TU: McCall is the roughest man in the world for his age surely and could give away 15 years and still batter most not in the top 10. Price seems a lovely fellow and can dish it out very well but he just cant take a hammering and come back. He ought to have stayed amateur; he is pretty much a world class 3 round boxer; which is no knock; the top amateur world and the professionals need different qualities.

He's just been stopped twice in a row and made to look awful.

He needs to fight an easy opponent next, it doesn't matter if he destroys them in the first round.

But if his confidence is so low he has to face someone he can destroy so easily then his psyche isn't up to real competition. He ought to have some behind closed doors fights if he needs to rebuild and not take the piss out of paying fans; he needs to box people around his level to improve; Thompson is above his level; he needs someone below Thmpsons' level and above the best of those he has beaten.

How is it taking the piss out of paying fans? If they don't want to watch him fight a weakish opponent then they shouldn't pay to watch it. Sparring sessions are not the same as professional fights.

He should not fight someone a level above Harrison or McDermott in his next fight. He needs an easy comeback fight, he could easily lose again if he fights someone good.
