Elisha Obed v. Oscar Albarado.

Post by Rover »

This almost happened, apparently when Albarado was champ. How would it've gone?

Who broke prime Albarado down like that? He outlasted the excellent Wajima.

Albarado is another fighter who had a seemingly very short shelf life as a top tier fighter. When I watched the tape of him against Bobby Czyz, only a few short years removed from his prime, he looked like he had the skills, physical ability and ring presence of a marginal journeyman/jobber.

The young Elisha Obed was quick, punched hard and had stamina.

Those upper-cuts from the 5" taller Bahamian would be the Shotgun's undoing,
but it would be a 'war' while it lasted.

Remember Oscar turned down Elisha in 1975 after he lost the Championship
to Koichi Wajima in their rematch.
Wasn't that because he wanted a third Wajima fight?

Il Duce wrote:Oscar Albarado {Manager, Nicky Kaplan} originally had wanted Elisha Obed to come out to California
to fight Oscar in early-1975, after Oscar lost the Championship to Koichi Wajima in January 1975.

But Oscar really wanted a rematch 'third bout' with Champion - Koichi Wajima, and was willing to
wait until Koichi fought #1 WBA-ranked Jae-Doo Yuh in June 1975, in hopes of fighting Koichi
in September 1975.

But once Koichi Wajima got upset by Jae-Doo Yuh, shortly after that bout {July 1975} Oscar
had no interest in working his way back up through the ranks by taking tough bouts anymore.

It was 'Title Bout or Nothing'.
I was talking about the one in early 75.

Of course this is all opinionated but I would have gone with Albarado during this period. I had seen a lot of him and thought he was outstanding. I saw the second Durden fight, the Martinez bout, both Del Cid fights, also Alex olguin and the first Eddie Mazon fight and mulled over a meeting between the two at the time. It would have been great. BTW, Il Duce, I wasn't familiar with Nicky Kaplan. I recall Harry Kabakoff running Albarado at this time. When did Kaplan enter the picture?

Il Duce, Albarado had a helluva set of whiskers. He was down but not anywhere near put out by Larry Brasier. As a matter of fact I believe he was up at '1'. It was just a quick 'got caught napping' shot that's all. Adolph Pruitt, on the other hand, hit him a very good counter in their bout that dropped him and of course there was the Del Cid fight (the 1st one). But Oscar got caught behind the left ear and was really buzzed. He was on his feet when that one was stopped. But if you look at his bouts with Indian Red Lopez, Hedgemon Lewis, Armando Muniz and Raul Soriano, they couldn't put a dent in him. I just like the pedigree and what I saw of Albarado over Obed. I will say this, I would have loved to have seen his bout with DeOliviera. Read about it at the time and seemed like a sizzler, although I was a bit surprised that DeOliviera appeared to be slugging with him (from what I gleaned from the magazine article at that time). De Oliviera was a nice sharp boxer with a sharp punch rather than a heavy one. Would have thought he would have boxed more.
