Spencer did get a title shot in 1966. He took on the legendary Bill McMurray for the prestigious California State title. Spencer got stopped in 7 rounds.

Wasn't Spencer also involved in the post-Ali exile tournament to determine the next world heavyweight champion (that Joe Frazier ultimately won)? SO that is two shots that he had.

Frazier decided to skip the tournament; but yes Spencer was in the tournament. In the quarterfinals, Spencer beat Terrell. In the semi-finals, he lost to Quarry.

Spencer was a decent fighter but how was he an uncrowned champion? He beat Terrell in what was actually a very competitive fight and then got streamrolled by Quarry, and then his career went down the tubes.

At his very best I can't seem ever being more than a knockout victim to Ali or Frazier.

Spencer would not have had the mobility, moves, or power to keep Frazier at bay.

He would have a better possibility of making it the distance with Ali, losing decisively on the cards.

Il Duce wrote:Correct Mr.. Yancey,

Thad had thought he had a 'Certified Steel Rebar Reinforced Chin'.

Light-to-Mediocre Punchers (ie; Cassius Clay, Ernie Terrell and Doug Jones} were
no problem for him, as he would walk them down.
.
7 stoppage losses say otherwise. And Terrell dropped him.

Probably the majority of those stoppages happened post '68 when he completely went off the rails as a boxer.

Quite honestly, I have paid Il Duce to bring these facts to light, in order that my claim that Jerry Quarry is the "greatest fighter to NOT attain championship status in the history of boxing", finally gets it's due consideration.

When you add the fact that George Foreman admits to avoiding Jerry, and that Jerry beat Thad.....well...there you have it. Case Closed.

Of course, it was well known on the west coast that Quarry was paid to lay down against Joe Frazier in their first fight.

You saw what Ringo did to Joe; Imagine if the Bellflower Belter had been allowed to fight with the cuffs off.

One of Jerry's finest acting jobs.

HBO needs to do a documentary on it, I'd say.

Calling him Clay is one of the perks of being a hater.

I can't bear to think what names he uses when skyping with old maid Nancey!

Jesus Bless.

Well to give anyone respect you acknowledge the name they prefer when they prefer it.

Il Duce....your opinion on this would be argued by some to be incorrect. Some will tell us that when he changed his name he asked with sincerity that people honor his decision. He may not have put a whuppin' on those who would not honor his wishes, but he did ask people to please do so.

Those who didn't ...did not please. Sounds like you still don't please.

I try to keep in mind which name he fought under at what time and address accordingly.

Same for Qawi,Saad,Mustafa etc.

Really? You have some documentation on Sonny's preference? I wasn't aware, but you can bet if Sonny called me on it in his presence, I'd defer to his better judgment. lol

I have both a long and short version of my name. Buzz and Buzzard.

But I don't care much what people call me as long as they don't call me late for dinner.

....You may be right about the timing of Ali's name. I'm just chimin' in cuz I can.

Charles Liston's nickname was 'Sonny Boy' back in the Missouri State Penitentiary System
back between 1950 and 1952.

Actually Mr. Liston preferred 'Top Cat' later on.
I never realised how much Thad looks like Joan Guzman.....lovechild??
