One-Two

Post by Ambling Alp II »

I was just thinking of this. You would not think it would be than rare for the top 2 fighters in a given weight division to clearly be the top 2 for a few years.

Pep and Saddler were clearly the best two featherweights for a few years. But there does not seem to be many other examples. Anyone come up with other examples?

Mayweather and Pacquaio were the best 2 WWs for a while.
Were Frazier and Ali considered number 1 and 2 until Frazier lost to Foreman?
Klitschko Brothers though I don't know off the top of my head how long Vitali retired for.

Jones and DM would be another one. You would think there would be many more in over 100 years of the sport.

The problem with this is there are four World Champions at any given time, so to be the undisputed top two, they would need to hold all the belts between them.

That said, Timo Bradley and Amir Kahn were both unified world champions at Light Welterweight not too long ago - (though I'm not sure if they held those belts long enough to be considered for this).

I initally though of Chris Eubank and Nigel Benn at Super Middleweight circa 1991-93ish - but whatabout Michael Nunn (WBA) and James Toney and Roy Jones Jr.
