bring back same day weigh-ins

Post by dalcumly »

Read an excellent article in either the Boxing News or Boxing Monthly this week regarding the issue of same day weigh -ins for title fights.
The original argument for bringing the weigh in back to the day before the fight, was to allow boxers to re-hydrate as best they can, which would allow more fluid into the skull to cushion the brain. Apparently when someone is de-hydrated this space becomes 'dry' and is also the last place to see the positive effects of re-hydration. This practice seems medically sensible.
But , boxers and their teams have now used the 24 -30 hours pre fight weigh in to deliberately gain an advantage over their opponent. With the use of sports nutritionists some boxers are able to put on an incredible amount of weight in the intervening period ,so in some instances ,instead of a middleweight title fight we could have a light heavy fighting a super middle.
It has now gone beyond a joke in my eyes because the safety gained by introducing the early weigh-in has now been superseded by the dangers of much bigger men fighting much smaller opponents . We have to have to ask ourselves what was the original purpose of having different weight categories? It surely was to ensure that boxers fought opponents of equal size making it a relatively fair contest .
Do we have to wait for another ring tragedy ,this time due to excessive weight difference instead of dehydration ,before changes are brought in. Personally I would go to the extreme and have boxers weigh in , inside the ring , just before the fight started.

I don't think the the balance of fighters weighing heavy on fight night is any where near the dangers of a dehydrated fighter getting near enough straight into the ring. Some fighters go through hell to make the weight and iI'd seriously fear for their safety if they had to box around just over an hour after being on the scales. Is there even any conclusive proof that the heavier fighter always wins, dispenses more damaging blows or if it's even an advantage in the first place. There is an argument though that if a fighter really struggles to make weight (say he has to use saunas or hot salt baths etc) he shouldnt be fighting at that weight.

I think the day before weigh ins are good, and the IBF rule of not weighing 10lb over the weight limit on the fight day.

This is Canelo weighing 166lbs at a check weigh-in for his fight in a 30 days time. He still has to lose 14lbs!!!
How can he do that safely? and Mayweather is already on weight, in fact 2lbs under.

What would happen would be that the weigh ins would be 1am on the day and the fight the same time so pointless

It could work if they had check weigh ins a few days before the fight to make sure that they are not dangerously dehydrating, and at least it would mean that fighters fight in the correct weight category.

Not going to happen though, and the way it is currently is safer.

Pros do in the UK for championship fights (excluding Masters titles which is downright dangerous but that's a different story). Iirc you have to be within 10% of your fighting weight 3 days before.

Same day weigh-ins would be dangerous now IMO, boxers would still be cutting weight in the same way they do now, but they wouldn't have chance to properly rehydrate before entering the ring. It'd lead to a lot more serious injuries IMO

I think he should do it comfortably, he's not going to have to crash it off and looking at that there's still plenty of fat on him, he's probably breathing in as well.

Im not sure that there is any perfect solution, the old way and the new way has its flaws. Personally i hate the weight advantage people can get themselves by draining down for weigh in's.

And anyone who thinks weight doesnt make a difference is delusional.
Look at the state John Murray was in after rios came in heavy.

You are of course right mate. I think I was getting confused with the 30 day 10% ruling the WBC use.

You can't be serious? Some fighter could put on 14-18lb in that time.. And some only put on a couple, then these 2boxers fighting each other....

A fighter can put on a lot more than a stone in 2 days, Paul Butler's a Super Flyweight and in his last fight he came into the ring at 9st 1lb, 12lbs heavier than he weighed in at, imagine what someone like Chavez Jr could do, he puts on a stone and a half with day before weigh ins.

MachoMan09 wrote:If you understand how weight cutting (and refuelling) works, you will understand why having the weigh-ins 48 hours prior would not result in any properly refuelled fighters coming in significantly heavier than they do now, with 24 hours to re-carb and re-hydrate. The only fighters who would come in noticeably heavier than they do currently would be the ones who are not doing their refuelling properly under the current system.
Fighter's would just be able to drain themselves even more, Chavez could probably get close to 11st with 48 hour weigh ins and then enter the ring weighing over 13st, that isn't safe for either fighter.

That happens now. The difference between 24 hours and 48 hours is 100% more time for those fighters who either struggle or don't know how to properly refuel and rehydrate in 24 hours.

If a boxer is only gaining 2lbs between the 24hr prior weigh-in and the fight, he is either extremely competent and confident at the weight, or he's an idiot and should be a division below at least.

Not 48 hours.. He way it is not is fine.

Why not have the weigh in and then set a limit on weight entering the ring.
Surely with modern sport science they could set parameters of weight based on rehydration.
But cap it so the weight gained is only from liquid and food so fighters are safely hydrated and energised but not at an advantage over an opponent.
This would likely reduce dangerous cutting as the fighter cannot load up after.
Its a really interesting topic with a dark underbelly due to the dangers.
We need to change and enforce something ,its always been there and is acceptable even after all the tragedies. Its like smoking in pubs was the norm and people screamed blue murder when they banned it but it needed doing.

I think the present regulations are good enough and I would add that if a boxer has to seriously dehydrate themselves to make weight he is obviously in the wrong weight division and the manager and trainer should move him up a weight if they are doing their job properly and are concerned for the Boxers safety (which is their job)

banning smoking in pubs was one of the dumbest things ever done. as would bringing back same day weigh ins. there will always be some who can gain advantages from certain rules, but thats life...some are faster than others, or have more power, or better chins. it makes far more sense to give people time to rehydrate.

if same day weigh ins are brought back in most fighters would have to move up 1 or even 2 divisions, cutting fluid is not a problem if done correctly with day before weigh ins, you have 36 hours to rehydrate yourself which is enough time to get your levels back up to normal, the problem is then you will have one fighter weighing a lot more than the other on the day of the fight, but this is less dangerous than being dehydrated, its a lesser of 2 evils imo, if im getting hit by somebody that's 10lbs heavier than me but im fully fit and strong at the weight id have zero problems with that, but when you are dehydrated and weight drained a school kid can hurt you with punches because you just have nothing at all in you, like I said its the lesser of 2 evils

Im not for same day weigh ins I just think a cap on entering the ring or better monitoring of weight prior to weigh in.
As for the smoking ban that's your opinion I think its better done outside personally.
