what defines a good chin ?
what defines a good chin ?
Is it really a boxers ability not to go down or their ability to recover ?
Re: what defines a good chin ?
Bit of both like Tyson Fury goes down easy, but is never all over the place.

The one that gets hit very rarely I think you'll find

Re: what defines a good chin ?

Yeah for me getting knocked down a lot doesn't necessarily mean a bad chin. Naz got put down a lot in his career but I can't think of a single time after all the knockdowna he suffered that I thought he was in danger of getting stopped.
Re: what defines a good chin ?
Indeed. Bellew (who posted earlier in this thread), Fury, Naz and Tito Trinidad are a few examples of fighters who have illustrated great recovery after getting knocked down. All of whom have good chins.jameswilson wrote:Yeah for me getting knocked down a lot doesn't necessarily mean a bad chin. The definition of a good chin is Larry Holmes and Marvin Hagler.
Mind you, Calzaghe had a great chin. He might go down, but he gets up clear headed.

Re: what defines a good chin ?
In conclusion:
The ability to take full power shots on the chin and never/rarely going down + quick recovery rate in the event of going down = Good chin.

Jimmy Hill and Will Young are other good examples of good chins.
Re: what defines a good chin ?
bobby vanzie had a superb chin, I saw him unconscious with rolling eyes on the floor and still made the count and was ready to box on, and then win by stoppage.
Re: what defines a good chin ?
The direct opposite of Paul 'Scrap Iron' Ryan's chin is a good chin ......
Re: what defines a good chin ?
Bruno had a good chin just didn't come close tie up, Mercer had an Iron Jaw also Lebedev the punishment he was shipping took its toll on his face!!

I'd say it was Jones who showed the chin in that fight. Lededev landed flush about 50 times and never moved him.freddydoesdallas wrote:God I was just starting to forget about lebedev's face!matko wrote:Bruno had a good chin just didn't come close tie up, Mercer had an Iron Jaw also Lebedev the punishment he was shipping took its toll on his face!!

Question is how are some humans able to withstand power were others would be snoozing??
Is it they don't close there eyes & register punches?? Thicker skulls??? Stronger necks, more or thicker brain fluid.
Best chins for me are James toney, oliver mcall, bhop,Chavez snr

Henry Wharton's chin withstood full power shots from world class punchers without ever looking remotely hurt. The only time he got dropped(caught very square on) it seemed to wake him up and he finished the job.

Its two points really.
There's a good chin and there's good recovery powers.
You can become a good fighter with either one of the qualities but with both you can be a great fighter.

True, but I have both & I'm still poo!i think a lot of it is down to being relaxed.some go stiff when there's a shot on its way to them.which is a lot to do with ko'sClint Magnum wrote:Its two points really.

Definitely agree Johnny. Especially if you go stiff immediately after the first good shot which is usually psychological!
Look at Kovalev Saturday night. So relaxed when going forward and more importantly even when getting hit. On a more domestic level I've reffed the likes of Sid Razak and Jody Meikle who also prove this like yourself. The reason why so many so called journeymen hardly ket KO'd isn't cause they fight negative, it's because they are relaxed under pressure and ride a lot of the shots.
Bruno springs to mind as the opposite of this example. If only he could have learned that skill he'd have been a truly fearsome fighter.

A strong neck doesn't automatically give you a good chin but it helps absorb a punch which can prevent the horrible snapping movement. Look at Holyfield/Hagler. Solid necks, great beardhurlock wrote:Question is how are some humans able to withstand power were others would be snoozing??

Re: what defines a good chin ?
Great chins come in all shapes and sizes. There have been fighters with pencil thin necks with great chins and also fighters with a massive neck that couldn't hold a shot.
Ali had a half decent chin
