Give Nathan Cleverly a break

Post by TopGun »

All this hate towards Nathan Cleverly I find a little insulting. Nathan is a world class operator and I think give it a few more years and we will realise that he was beaten by someone who could go on to massive things. I still think if he fought Hopkins it would be a close fight.

If you think he is so bad then you must really not rate Tony Bellew.

Well said. Nathan is still a very good fighter and has already achieved a lot. We should actually applaud him for taking such a dangerous fight as a voluntary defence. Nathan insisted on taking this fight. He is one brave lad! :salut:

That's what you want to see as a boxing fan aswell. You want to see the best fight the best. You dont want to see mickey mouse fights so respect to Nathan for fighting Kovalev.

If you tell the World that you are going to put a Calzaghe v Lacy style beating on someone, then proceed to get absolutely outdone and stopped by the guy, I reckon you can expect some stick.

It's part and parcel of top line sport unfortunately.

Props to him for fighting Kov and achieving what he has. He isn't world class though. Saturday night showed that. Kov is world class and there was a pretty big difference between the two.

He wasn't experienced enough to deal with the situation. We all want top fights. We all moan about people protecting their unbeaten records. Then as soon as someone loses we write them off.

Khan had a far worse defeat and he has had a good career, mixing at the very top. Cleverly can do the same...maybe even do better.

Chad Dawson got sparked in just over a minute by a super middleweight. He is and was world class.

You as a boxing fan wanna see a complete miss match and a subsequent beat down.
He was stupid to take it he has earnt next to fuckall considering he was a WC and now his future earnings are obliterated and he was lucky he wasn't hurt.

They are the facts it was a dumb move all round he wasn't even mandatory ridiculous

Top fighters can get knocked out, it happens.

Khan came back and yeah Dawson proved he was world class long before he got knocked out.
Clev ain't proved he is world class for me. Khan and Dawson both got switched off before the fight began. Clev was broken down and outclassed.

Cleverly got chinned against the first "world class operator" he got in with.

I don't rate Bellew at all, he will also get found out if he gets a title shot.

I'd say the pair of them are only slightly better than British level and have been matched very very well indeed.

No by proposing fighters continue defending their belts against chumps forever and thus driving the casual fans away from the sport who are the ones that can make it a significant player again.

Cleverly got beaten by someone who could become p4p number 1. I think we need to appreciate we may have just been introduced to a superstar.

Agreed Columbo.

Cleverly, as a world champion (WBO or otherwise) coming into this fight absolutely should have been expected to take this type of fight. He lost... But at least we now know the outcome.

UFC leads the way well in terms of competitive championship fights. Sink or swim. It's the absolute way it should be, despite how disappointing the outcome might sometimes be.

That's the thing. I have more respect for someone who fights the toughest competition ie Froch and comes up short every now and again vs someone who doesnt fight anyone of note but has a fancy record. Aside from that, if poor matches being made puts me off the sport somewhat and im a hardcore fan who watches it all the time then what kind of effect is it going to have on casual fans who arent that invested in the sport?!

Deep down there isn't any real animosity for Nathan.

Perhaps it's needle between forum posters. We've had some really going crackers at other posters, just because they disagreed and thought Kovalev was going to win.

Clevtards even.

I give Cleverly props for at least trying to fight a genuine world-class operator. He gave it a shot which is more than can be said for most of Warren's joke belt chumpions.

Cleverly should have been fighting top 20 fighters over the last 22 months instead of bums. If he had fought better opponents in the lead up to this fight then he would have had a much better chance.

It was too much of a step up and it was poor matchmaking. Cleverly should have fought Braehmer or Shumenov instead.

I agree Horse a Braehmer fight would have been an excellent contest and a proper barometer of Clevs actual abilities.

It's not his fault Braehmer pulled out the week of the fight.

very, very well said, when you look at the fight it was easily one of the hardest of his career and without a doubt he can and will improve as a world class boxer and even if his next fight isn't on the world level he still has dozens of fights available to him.

*non title fights :
- Jean Pascal
- rematch Nadjib Mohameddi
- Cedric Agnew
- Robert Berridge
*titles away from the world level :
- a rematch with Tony Bellew the current BBB of C British light heavyweight champion and WBC silver light heavyweight champion
-Enzo Maccarinelli the current commonwealth light heavyweight champion
- the winner of Juergen Braehmer vs. Stefano Abatangelo who fight for the EBU light heavyweight championship
*world title fights :
- Beibut Shumenov the current WBA world light heavyweight champion and IBA champion
