Post by Matchfixer »

I'm sure this is on another post somewhere recently but I couldn't find it.

Anyway just seen this and found it very funny.

What about that The Immaculate Conception bloke.

Dark Destroyer was pretty good, as was kid chocolate.

'Marvelous' Marvin Hagler is pure class, as is Mike 'The bodysnatcher' McCallum.

Colin 'Dynamo' Dunne, Chuck 'The Bayonne Bleeder' Wepner is a pretty funny one too.

Some of my favourites are:
The Vampire (American middleweight Wilbert Johnson, who used to emerge from a coffin in the ring).
The Livermore Larruper (Max Baer).
The Nebraska Wildcat (Ace Hudkins).
The Fargo Express (Billy Petrolle).
The Man of Steel (the one and only Tony Zale).
The Scotch Wop (Johnny Dundee).
The King of The Canebrakes (Young Stribling).
The Durable Dane (Battling Nelson, who was so durable he ended up in the nuthouse).
Fireman Jim Flynn (he once chinned Dempsey in a round).
The Fighting Leatherneck (Gene Tunney).
Philadelphia Jack O'Brien.

I like threads like this, did you know that "The brown bomber" was a nickname given to Louis by the press, and that before that one of the names they bandied around was "the chocolate chopper"?

I used to read KO and Boxing whatever the year was in the late 1980s/early 1990s and from time to time they printed some good nicknames.

One that stands out is Mexican light heavyweight Juan 'Idi Amin' Hernadez. I seem to remember 1988 Olympic gold medallist being nicknamed 'Boxing' Andrew Maynard too.
