*merseybox* Do you know the pub, quite close to Lime Street, got pictures on the walls of Scouse boxers, McAteers, etc. Went in there by chance years ago, i'm up there the weekend, might have another look in, can't remember where it was though. Thanks.

Yeah he did. I know he wasn't active, but Earnie Shavers worked the door in Yates for a long while too. Not sure if he would be suitable for the book or if he was already mentioned in vols 1 and 2.

tiger's biography was in Mersey Fighters 1 - he had a few fights in Nigeria before coming to Liverpool - where he lost his fiorst four as a pro here! Need to get in touch with Alan Dean too - he beat him during this stage of his career. Tiger later twice Ring fighter of the year.

thats the Yankee Bar - Irish American bar - used to be owned by Terry McHale (RIP) a former pro who we tried to get in Mersey Fighters 2 - he didnt want to though. He drove Sugar Ray Robinson around during his visit to UK back in the day.

There was a boxer in Mersey Fighters 1; think he was around the 50's and 60's he had about 60 knockouts -boxed at a high level but I can't remember his name - he must have been a wicked hitter; can you please let me know who he may be?

I was in there the other week, how long has it been like that? I remember it as a normal looking pub, but I think that's where it was. I was in another one, maybe The Globe, had a sloping floor if I remember, had a few photos of a Boxer on the wall, don't know if he was the Guvnor, or not. Do you know the one I mean? Think it was opposite Central Station by the door of a big shopping mall.

What about Gary Thornhill?

interviewed richie for the bok last month - again, some great stories. hes doinf really well - own business working all over the world.

what about joe bygraves? he was based in birkenhead for a bit, he is a mate of mine's grandad,my mate runs the 12quays boxing gym gym now in wallasey. joe beat henry cooper and i think he fought ingemar johansson in a world title eliminator.

floyed churchill used to train at 12 quays for a bit,derek isaman brought him there,derek does the handing up at all the shows up and down the country,im sure if you ask him he would know abit more about were he is and what he is doing.

the globe has lots of pics of boxers in but theyre mainly of just the one - Johnny Cooke - he drinks in there a lot. hes not too well at the moment though. johnny's biography was in Mersey Fighters 2. He won British, CW and fuoght for European title. Late bloomer. Turned pro late and won Brit title (with Johnny Campbell) late too.

again - another name that has already been done - Joe's biog was in Mersey Fighters 1. great boxer. met all the tope heavies of the day - and beat most too - returned to Jamaica to run a pig farm was last we heard when writing biog but despite trying all media in jamaica we couldnt get hold of him. turned out he was still alive at that time but he died for years later. someone wrote an obituary for him - and bassey - for one of the main papers at the time that were full of errors. shame.

Hi, thanks for responding - I don't think it was Charley White, I read the book in the library; I've just been on Amazon and bought a copy - I'll put his name up in the next few days

update on this project as obviously the original publication fdate has long gone - its pretty difficult writing a book while being made redundant from your day job, looking for another, then travelling 15 hours a week to and from the new one!

anyway - bit of revision was needed so MF3 will likley be out March/April next year with a reduced number of biographies - although all are a lot longer than normal - for example: George Turpin (pro early - mid 70s who won bronze medal at 1972 Munich Olympics - and saw the Israeli athlete tragedy unfold while there) is in it and his biog is around 10,000 word long. Similarly, David Burke is included and his biog is around 8,000 etc

We will have around 13-15 fighters in the book, (so around 90,000 words plus) including:

Billy Seasman, Ronnie Hough, Noel Quarless, Paul Edwards, David Burke, Stan Atherton, Richie Wenton, John Naylor jnr, Ian Chantler (St Helens), Alan Levene, Tony Cunningham, George Turpin, with hopefully two or three others to be finalised soon.

Great insights into boxing, not just in the city but around the world, the fighters, their thoughts, training, methods and views on their careers. Hopefully it will be a great read. Again, due to other media outlets not being arsed this will be published privately just like MF2 and my two books on Liverpool FC.

Further details nearer the time. All the lads should be attending the launch (great opportunity for you to purchase the book - be around £14-£15 - and get it signed) which will be in Liverpool - South Liverpool near my house! -sometime late March early April - on a Thursday!

ah jimmy stewart he was decent - beat jack kid berg at the stadium - I've got programme and orig photo from it. helepd by fact berg hurt his ankle. great left hook on him.
