Modern Era of Cutmen

Post by IrishCutman »

Hi My name is Joe Clifford and i have been running courses for Cutmen since 2009. The reason i founded Cutman was to raise the bar in terms of education on the profession but ultimately education on hygiene and sanitation (cross contamination) in the sport of boxing.
The Course is Sanctioned & Recognized by the Pro Boxing Union of Ireland and throughout the British Isles and has had huge success over the years. It is now affiliated with the International Cutman Association of which i am now the Irish Representative.
What alarms me today in amatuer boxing is; the introduction of the new rule 16.2.3 why permits the use of adrenaline 1:1000 and other Haemostatic agents (drugs that stop blood). The lack of education out there on what a real Cutman is? But Ultimately the simplistic views that most people have of the profession and the use of the drugs.
I have no idea which way the new rule is going to affect those fighters or coaches involved in senior boxing. But do know this; unless those at ringside are educated and practiced its going to be a mess.
I'm not here to sell the course but rather to promote Irish Cutmen & Women who have served their apprenticeship (60 hours = 1 year) working under supervision of Professional Cutmen.
Running 1 day courses is not adequate for any individual to go out there and practice at the side of any ring. Its an introduction to the profession and a real eye opener to all who attend.
Our standard (Cutman) is recognized Internationally (International Cutman Association) as the bar to set for all Cutmen and Cutwomen.
We are NOT professional boxing coaches or trainer or promoters. We may work in professional and amatuer Combat Sport but as a form of first aiders. So i really don't know how the new rule really affects us? Other than the resistance to use an outside entity.
The other question is our lack of acceptance to embrace the fact that women are a huge part of our sport today and are just as professional and good as any man. In fact other combat sports have embraced female Cutmen and are now as common a place as men in other Combat Sports.

Hello, My name is Carlos Vargas from Los Angeles, California. I like what you are doing Joe, I like the fact that you are educating the individuals interested in the Cutman profession. I myself have been working Corners for a long time. I also am a Retired Los Angeles City Fireman/medic. The statement that caught me the most from your post is the contamination part. I am totally against the cotton swabs or gauze bandages hanging from a sweat band or the mouth or the ear, lol. Sweat and saliva from the cutman will now enter an open wound on the fighter. That just touches the reasons why thats not sanitary. everyone has their own style, i will not knock anyone's style. we are all trying to accomplish the same thing, keep the injury to a minimum and the bleeding stopped. I will continue to watch your posts, they are very interesting. thank you Carlos Vargas (Cutman Carlos)
