Tony Tubbs (vs Page) vs Mercer (vs Morrison)

Post by keithmoonhangover »

How do you see this one panning out?

I think unless Tubbs gets caught, he wins pretty much every round.

Mercer by wide decision. Tubbs was horrible against Page, that's the worst fight I've ever seen.

Tubbs by decision. By far the better boxer.

Page-Tubbs was not nearly as horrible as Saad makes it out. Compared to most of Klitschko's fights Page-Tubbs was the FOTC.

LOL, it was ghastly. My friend Cliff Rold was going back over all the title fights of the 80's and rightfully cited that many of them were much better than they get credit for. That one made him wince. No argument that the Klitschko fights are awful, but the 9 more minutes push Tubbs/Page rubbing breasts over the top. Though to be fair to you, I rarely watch Klitschko fights.

Tubbs v Page was televised live and that was the only time I've ever seen it. Think I had Tubbs by 3. Seemed to remember some taunting in that one. For some reason I can't remember it being that bad. Certainly nothing like Tyson v Smith.

It was televised in the early incarnation of Fox. They did Mancini/Bramble & Bumphus/Hatcher as well as another card or two. After Page/Tubbs they shut down Boxing on their programming for a long ass time. Until Tyson/Mathis if memory serves me. You tube it, no way you could endure the whole thing.

Page-Tubbs, Bumphus-Hatcher, and Mancini-Bramble II were on NBC. FOX wasn't around yet.

I was at each. Tubbs-Page had the making for great card but wasn't much. Mancini-Bramble, Hatcher -Bumphus card was very good.

Wasn't Bumphus v Hatcher up against another fight telecast ? I seem to remember flipping back and forth. One minute Bumphus was controlling the action, I switched back and he'd just been stopped.

No, they were on Fox (meaning the UHF channel), could have had a different name at the time. Watched them all and they most certainly were not on NBC. Manicini/Bramble II was on HBO.

Those two had 7 fights in the amateurs, so they were used to each others' fighting style.A prime Page could've have pulled that fight out, but certain things affected him.The Tubbs that beat Page would easily outpoint Mercer.

No it wasn't. I don't really know what else to say.

I'm seriously starting to doubt this forum.

Mercer would have fitted right in with the under performing 80s crowd. Possibly even replicated Ruddock type defiance against Tyson ultimately.

I agree with Saad on most things but I always think he is way off on Page/Tubbs. Even if it isn't a great viewing spectacle, it is fine boxing from Tubbs. And certainly in that fight he outfoxes in Greg Page a man with a superior ring IQ to Ray Mercer.

I don't see a way for the best Mercer even of the Lewis fight to solve the riddle of Tubbs. He was a very, very clever boxer.
