A question about Archie Moore

Post by gilgamesh »

Here on Boxrec, he's listed as having a record of 185-23-10 with 131 KO's.

The Ring lists him as 194-26-8 with 141 KO's.

My question is, what are the fights that The Ring listed in their record books that can't be verified?

Also where do those 2 other draws come from?

I also want to know if he was 42 or 46 when he fought Clay/Ali.

The discrepancy in Archie Moore's record totals came about because Archie's record for years was pretty incomplete in the Ring Record Book and Archie claimed he had many matches that weren't listed. The Ring asked Archie to help fill in the blanks and he did as best he could giving names of opponents, the results, but not very accurate dates, which the RING added.
Years later, the late Tim Leone, who was the director of IBRO and headquartered in Missouri, researched Archie's early bouts from the St. Louis area and Illinois newspapers and was able to add some bouts and give exact dates of matches but found that some of the fights Archie claimed turned out to be amateur fights so the KO totals became less. With so many fights that Archie was involved in it was obviously hard for him to remember which of his early ones were amateur and which were professional.
