Disgrace McDonnell being stripped by ibf?

Post by the truth »

Does anyone else think it's a disgrace McDonnell being stripped of Ibf title & a fighter he's beat getting the vacant shot? Surely Jamie should get a crack at vacant title?

I agree its a shame what happened with Hobson after all the work Hobson done to get him a world title shot in his own back yard and the financial hit he must of took , but none the less an out of the ring dispute between a fighter and a promoter doesn't justify Jamie losing his title which he won in the ring,

I like Hall but he shouldn't be fighting for a world title under any circumstances that's more of a disgrace than anything that he is!

If McDonnell just made 2 or 3 defences he would have been able to pay back the Manager and leave on decent terms.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere he was offered the chance to defend it in time but didn't take it due to the money not being right? and I'm also pretty sure that came from his own statement, So he has shot himself in the foot, unless I read it wrong,

Shambles? - yes absolutely
disgrace? - no not really, he needed to defend it in time and he didn't. whatever the reasons were that's it.

With regards to Hall, I love the fella and I hope he wins and then gives a rematch to Jamie Mac

Its an absolute joke,a fighter spends his career chasing a dream of winning titles the pinnacle being a world title then it gets stripped from you?? I thought the ibf was the only genuine title that didnt have all these interim, international and super titles so i thought they might be a little understanding of a fighter changing his promotional team and give him a little extra time. Shame on you ibf youre just as bad as the other laughable world titles. :box:

McDonnell done this too himself. He thought the grass was greener and refused to sign the contracts to fight Malinga. The IBF give enough days for this to be agreed so is his fault. He will keep his ranking lets hope that He doesn't get tied to contract with Hobson. How many times is Hearm going to be allowed to poach fighters without being apprehended

IBF are also the strictest of all at enforcing their mandatories, even when recycling the same names, due to corruption problems from years ago.

also how long is hearn going to have exclusive sky sports contract? this is surely making fighters anxious to move stables, so that they can defend their titles on TV.

Yep - he gets stripped for not making a defense in time when they're genuine boxing issues and Vitali stays WBC champ even though he hasn't fought since 2012-09-08 and is now running for president. What a sh1t sport boxing has become

It has always been the same mate.

Go back to the days when black men were not allowed to box for titles, then the sport (at world level) was run by "The Mob", then we had the "Cartel" in this country etc. etc.

It is a joke that in the modern age of transparency and governance etc. that this still goes on.

I agree 'barn, IBF defences must sometimes seem shockingly nit-picking & arbitrary to a member of the general public (I can only imagine the tidal wave of demand in response to the third--fourth?--Taklani Ndlovu vs Steve Molitor fight) & often result in what we as fans see as nonsensical matches... But being caught out over the ranking rigging has made them incredibly anal about enforcing such things.

In practice, of course, it just means fighters with a management who has a "special relationship" with the IBF get the preferential treatment & all the title shots... Look at the South African merry-go-round for IBF titles between 122-130 from a few years back, the same four/five dudes arriving in mandatory positions like something from a bus timetable.

& it also has the unenviable side effect of enforcing strict rematches of terrible, one-sided eyesores of fights, because someone who was recently #1 contender or lost a title shot (no matter how widely) will, likely as not, get a chance in the next eliminator.

I can't help but feel sometimes that as boxing fans we get the sanctioning bodies we deserve.

Not sure what the issue is. If you win a vacant title you have six months to defend it, no questions.

Jamie didn't and has been stripped

A title should be won and lost in the ring and I can remember when he won the bout it was clear that there was a mandatory to be fought at a certain date; it is a shame it's all gone belly up but that's people for you. If Jamie wanted away from Hobson then that's alright and if Hobson has got on the phone or ballsed up the paperwork on purpose then who could blame him really? Jamie will have to start again and Hearn may find it difficult to get a British promoter willing to play ball; he could have used his time in ascendancy to make alliances and make a broad power base but I can imagine more than a few voodoo dolls been bought with a dab on fake tan on them.

I'm sure with Hearn's links with the IBF - Jimmy Mac will find himself in an eliminator fight soon enough and then, if successfully, Stuart Hall might find himself in a similar situation.... will Hobson play ball.

Maybe a bit of Karma for McDonnell for never rematching with Napa all those years ago.

I understand that McDonnell left Hobson because he wasn't happy with the £60k purse for his first defence.

He won't get paid that for an eliminator and I reckon Hobson would take pleasure in ensuring that he gets nowhere near that if/when he challenges Hall.

In the meantime McDonnell is earning less now than he could have done if he had stayed where he was - I wonder how many fights Eddie will get him, and how much he will get paid (he must be difficult to promote - a good lad but not super talented, not in a fashionable weight category, and he doesn't seem to have much personality).

The fight wouldn not have been done in six months as no contract for Malinga was signed

There is so much more to this story than meets the eye. It will be very interesting reading when it all unravels.
