Thanks for posting this, may copy this link and add it to the John L. Sullivan thread I made months ago that covered virtually every aspect of Sullivan's long career.

There are some cool tidbits in there:

1. What is a sweater? It really was used to help him sweat off weight.

2. Why do boxers go shirtless? To keep from catching a cold when fighting outside, and the tradition still is used today.

This tells me more about the character of John L than all of the literature I have read combined (which is admittedly weak in regard to the old-timers anyway).

I always associated him more with alchoholic excess than a serious training regime. I think I will focus my reading list on the turn of the century era, seems like I have much to learn.

Has anybody googled Nellie Bly? She was a badass chick.

I was told that a relative - John Joseph Donovan - boxed John L Sullivan in an exhibition match. Does anyone know if this is true?

John Joseph Donovan was born 1867 in New York City but later lived in Lowell, Massachusetts. He is not related to Mike Donovan, as far as I know.

By the way, Nellie Bly was AWESOME!

There's a 1905 article here where Sullivan mentions a John Donovan in a long list of opponents he claims to have stopped in 4 rounds. Not a particularly uncommon name of course, but could be your relative.
