There is a lot of people who think both Ricky and Crawford are hype jobs. I was speaking to someone a few days ago who was a big Ricky Burns fan who now feels that he is all hype and not even world class.

My opinion is that the last 2 fights hasn't been the Ricky Burns I know. I feel that's because of the change of promoters. I think if he sticks to his boxing he will give anyone a good fight. As for the fight v Crawford if Ricky can keep it long concentrate on establishing the 1-2(jab/cross) then following that up with some body shots and 3/4 punch combinations then he can win this fight. I have not seen anything of Crawford that says he is a different level to Ricky!! I'm going for Ricky on points. I think the last couple of fights are a kick up the arse that will make him a better fighter

To be fair, Burns was out of the ring for a while and you could put the fight with Gonzalez down to ring rust

And the fight with Beltran, he had a broken jaw, but still had the bravery and heart to come through

He was lucky to get the draw as we all know but he is no way a 'hype job'

He beat Gonzalez fair and square...proved how good a fighter he was by taking his chance when it came. That's something to applaud not criticise.

He rode his luck against Beltran but it was Burns who won the last 2 rounds on most scorecards...despite being behind...getting beat up...and having a broken jaw... he could have easily folded...he didn't...

Hype job??? For the vast majority of his major fights ricky has been "getting exposed".

Crawford hasnt fought the level of fighters that ricky has fought so im not sure if he is the next lacy or ward yet.

All i know is Ricky is world class and need to start showing it again

Ricky needs to get back on his jab. His game plan was not right for the last fight. I suspect Billy and Ricky will see it as a blessing as you need those bad fights and lucky results to realise what you need to do in the future. Ricky needs to box like he did against Katsidis. I'm sure Billy will be on Rickys case not to mess up again. That said he did break his jaw so Ricky will now know he can get through the tough times.

Burns seems a lovely man and is a very determined and talented boxer; he has been lucky with the judging etc, no neutral could say otherwise. Billy is Rickys' trainer and has his back 24/7 even on the internet; he'll argue black is white for Burns which is a nice quality but means he can't be taken seriously where Ricky is concerned.

I still can't get my head round peoples reaction to the Gonzalez fight. Yeah he was being schooled but still broke the guys heart. End of. A two weight world champion who has made 7 successful defences and is 8-0-1 (3) in world title fights. Anyone questioning if he's world class is out of their mind! Even if he loses to Crawford he's still been a fantastic champion. :salut:

You have to look at who those seven defenses were against though. He's been a good world champion but I wouldnt say a great one.

First 2 were gimmes but he deserved that after pulling off mission impossible against Martinez which was an amazing win. Cook's back giving out wasn't Ricky's fault and moving up and outboxing Katsidis who had massacred Earl and Mitchell on previous visits was another sensational win as he was a clear under dog. He then dominated an ex champion in Moses and destroyed a legit threat in Mitchell. Gonzalez's talent was clear for all to see as was Beltran's power. He's not had a Froch type of schedule but hasn't been fed the conveyor belt of bums the likes of Calzaghe, Eubank and Naz got at points in their career either.

Daviedee you simply are a ledgend in your own mind, you make boxing sound so so easy.
Were as in fact you aint got a clue about domestic level boxing let alone world level boxing, now just let the people who know what there doing get on with there job shut your big mouth and maybe just maybe you might learn something.
Lets be perfectly blunt here Ricky is way beyond any other Scottish fighter at present and he simply cant win with the likes of you, when he got beat at domestic level twice against good champions people said oh that's his level he wont go any further, now hes improved loads and became a two weight world champion people knock a performance were he got his jaw broken and fought on for 10 rounds, bravery beyond the call of duty but people are so fornicating blinded they'd rather criticise him, do believe be when I say Beltran would have been beaten comfortable had the injury not happened, Ricky was way to fast for him

To be fair though Billy, where's the proof that the jaw break happened in the second round? With all due respect obviously you and Ricky are going to say it happened that early in the fight because Ricky was losing from very early on. Beltran reckons it happened in the round *forgotten which round it was* when he knocked Ricky down.

When the Beltran fight was announced people criticized Hearn, sounded off about Burns.

People crying 'Oh he's had numerous losses and is a journeyman' after looking up his record.

There was even a thread asking why Burns wasn't on the cover of Boxing News and everyone suggested it was because the defense was so poor it wasn't worthy.

I couldn't believe what I was reading and stated this could be Burns final fight as champion and it was 50/50 and people laughed in my face.

I swear people folk don't watch boxing they just form opinions on forum talk and a quick glance at records.

We all agree burns benefitted from the judging but let's not play down Beltran because he's a proper tough bogeyman.

Ricky did well to keep up with such an injury.

Are you a complete mongol!! Go read back what I put. I'm the big mouth pot kettle and black. Ricky can't win with me? I'm a fan you idiot. Your a expert Billy let's be clear here, I have watched almost all of Ricky's fights since his loses to Carl and Alex. I also said to anyone that would listen after the Alex fight that Ricky would be a World Champion. I make boxing sound so easy? Ricky has those skills in his locker. I have watched his fights from recent to older and do you not agree when he throws his punches like I have said he gets more reward? You just need to watch the Martinez fight to see that. He has fought different in his last 2 fights maybe it just the quality of opponent is so high and Ricky can't fight his fight. As I keep telling you but it doesn't seem to get through to your thick head. I'm a fan of Ricky's!!! I still back the fact that he's world class. I argue saying I feel he could of beat broner and that he could beat Khan. But I will say one thing lucky I have met Ricky and know that he's such a nice guy and deserves everything because with the way you act you can see why he loses fans.

No doubt I will get another post from you saying how i know nothing about boxing and you know so much more and stop doubting Ricky. If your going to have a go Billy please read my posts properly and not make out I'm against Ricky. I'm a boxing fan with honest opinions that I don't change every 2 minutes. I also don't get caught up in all the hype I say my opinion whether right or wrong.

Beltran's argument is that it was the 8th round because he could still move his jaw after the knockdown and he claims if it was broken in the 2nd, Burns would have been in too much pain to move it. The complaints about pain in the corner started earlier than that, either after the 2nd or 3rd round, suggesting it was in the 2nd, but possibly wasn't a clean break that happened later on as the injury worsened.

I like Ricky and hes a great fighter but Billy you do him no favours. In his last 2 fights hes not set the world alight and theres nothing wrong with that as hes a world champion against great opponents. But you continue to come and say hell do this and hell do that. Ricky is a genuine nice guy who proves his doubters wrong in his own manner. In this world you get those who are quiet and go about there work and theres those who boast about there work. Ricky is the first and your trash talk is pointless and proberly makes him cringe. Before you say Ronnie we do it for banter, always have. Anyone who knows us will tell you the same we just do it for a wind up. We know hes got a bit of talent but turned over late and had no boxing past but tell you one thing nobody will get an easy fight with him. Billy admit I may not know alot about boxing and im sure your forgotting more than I know but one thing I do know is that it should be about the boxer not the trainer and you coming on here bragging about how you have changed Ricky etc, You should let others compliment you not do it yourself:) Maybe thats why you have such a short stable because your ego ruins your knowledge. These guys are the ones who put it all on the line, take a backward step and let them take the spotlight as they are far more deserving than yourself:)

I've given Billy Nelson some stick on here but must come to his defence, regarding the post immediately above.

I've often wondered when Billy took over the training of Ricky and I just googled it to find out - it was after Ricky's second defeat, against Carl Johanneson. He was 15-2 at that point in his career. I thought his effort against Carl that night in Leeds was appalling. To me, I thought he hadn't got the slightest intention of trying to win the fight, and the lack of ambition was really apparent to me.

So at that point he's 15-2, with two landslide points losses against the two decent opponents he'd fought. He barely won a round in either fight.

He then hooked up with Billy Nelson. He won 8 in a row, and picked up the Commonwealth title, and after a couple more wins he upset Roman Martinez for the WBO title. The rest is history.

I've had my criticisms of Ricky and have swapped insults with Billy but the bare facts speak for themselves. The Ricky Burns who fought Alex Arthur and Carl Johanneson, and the Ricky Burns since those losses, these are two totally different fighters. Something has changed. Presumably, Ricky did his absolute best against Arthur and Johanneson (even though he lost both fights by wide margins), and had a trainer at that point in time.

The only difference is Billy Nelson. You have to give credit where it is due and in terms of a trainer taking over a fighter and making great improvements, the evidence is there for all to see.
