Sometimes can boxers just be a too good...???

Post by ajwesty13 »

I watched Rigo this weekend and after a while i had realised I had drifted on the computer looking at new MP3 players..... The known cuban punches from all angles and is just an amazing talent... his fight against Donaire was a brilliant fight that had me on the edge of my seat... then i heard arthur talking about rigo being booed and suggesting that some fighters can actually be to good... at first i didnt understand but after pondering i realised that he has a point... agbeko looked completely out of his depth and the fight even though i enjoyed at first i found myself off and doing other things....

Is that why people are not keen on Mayweather... i personally really enjoy watching MW and then i thought if only if he fights the cream to.... yeah yeah i know a lot of people think he ducked fighters in their prime but i honestly think he has been the best boxer in decades with his systematical breakdown of Canelo was for me boxing art.. when i watched him against oscar i was cheering on Oscar and of course ricky.... anyway before this becomes MW thread it just seems that for me to enjoy a top fighter like Rigo or MW and even Ward they have to fight the best out there.. however is there enough out there to keep fighting at that level... thank god for catch weights i suppose....

SO can you really be to good??

I think yeah i suppose you can.....

I'm the same as you I love watching Mayweather, a perfect example of the sweet science. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but he's never even been cut has he?

Some people though want Morales-Barrera, Eubank-Benn scraps and can't appreciate boxing at its best.

Morales - barrera is boxing at it`s best. At least for me. I can fully appreciate what mayweahther and Rigo bring to the game, but give me a Morales - Barrerra any day.

There is a huge difference between Morales - Barrera and Kirkland v Tapia.

no i dont think he has been cut not even a accidental clash either..

I totally agree with the science, the boxing purist in me loves to watch an elite fighter at work, However scrappers and bangers like Durant, Benn and the new crop of Eastern European bangers do excite me and a good old bust up like murray v mitchell or Froch and kessler does flick my switch ... i just feel a little sorry for the elite fighter which is strange... look at ward is inactivity of good fights is probably down to lack of opposition and an injury but the super 6 stalled his career really...

Very true. It was an entertaining fight. However a fight such as Barrerra v Morales was just as brutal but with 10 x the skill level.

I think what made it better was the hatred they both felt so there so much tension... look at the Froch groves, the Benn Eubank ... when there is malice it seems to generate more of fight... i have to say that i ended up enjoying the Garcia lucas fight because you had to bangers but one with better boxing skills

I can't see this fight happening anytime soon Lomachenko is by far the much bigger guy.. Can see him winning the featherweight title then straight on to Super Feather then lightweight.. I wouldn't like to be any of those champions almost a guarantee they are getting fed to a lion. Rigo, Mayweather, lomachenko and just a different class. Would love to see lomachenko getting up to fight Mayweather just hope he doesn't retire before that

Im probably going to get slatted for saying this but if people find watching rigo and PBF boring how can they be real fans of boxing? Dont get me wrong we all love tear ups but to be a hardcore boxing fan surely you have to be a bit of a purist as well. Its the varying styles of boxing that make it such a great sport.

Lack of competitiveness like the OP is talking about is another thing and i agree entirely but if they are fighting people who should be competative and schooling them then its still a great fight imo - examples Rigo v donaire, PBF v Alvarez, Calzaghe v Lacy, Pac v Rios.

Yeah the MW v Canelo was magestic and i have watched the lacy calzaghe loads of times... I think such a gulf in class leaves me a little like meh... its the equivelent to watching Barcelona v acrington stanley .. :)

The art of boxing is to hit and not get hit, why can't people watch such brilliance? I understand casual fans don't appreciate it.

I appreciate Mayweather and marvel at his skill set but I'm not a huge fan of his nor do I enjoy his fights that much. It's mainly down to him being so much better than his opponent but still holding back going for the kill.

For example, the difference in the examples stated above, Calzaghe realised he was a level above Lacy and proceeded to batter him from pillar to post, much like Pacquiao does in his fights. Mayweather is content to cruise while keeping out of harms way as much as he can.

Can't say I blame him as I'm sure it's no fun being hit in the face but it doesn't lead to very fan friendly fights.

Its not that I dont like watching a master at work but the point I was making is when you so good it becomes difficult to find a fighter tomake a good fight. .. I don't like watching someone's who is Levels above taking out someone who doesn't posses the skills... id rather of watched 2 lower level fighters than the gulf on Saturday. ... using canelo v mw for instance before the fight was 50. 50 then mw just made a good fighter look ordinary. ...

I understand, fair enough if there's a mismatch but mayweather seems to always fight the best.

That's a lot Wlad though isnt it. He suffers for the same reason I think. Dont get me wrong, the fight with Povetkin was atrocious and Wlad was the main reason for that. I think generally speaking though, he's a very good operator who doesnt always get the credit he deserves because he's a lot better than everyone he fights and also because he's very defensively minded.

Exactly. I'm sure Wlad could end most fights in 1-3 rounds if he had more of a killer instinct. Mayweather maybe not so much as he doesn't have the same sort of power, but he could still beat the other guy up and take more risks, making his fights a little more interesting.

With Wlad's dodgy chin, it actually makes sense for him to be cautious, Mayweather actually has a good chin but still hardly risks getting caught on it.

I can't think of any fights in world boxing I want to see more than Adonis V Kovalev and Rigo V Lomachenko for completely different reasons!

I guess with Mayweather what's the point of him taking more risks, he fights, he wins, he's the best. He hits and rarely gets hit back, that's the idea I suppose of boxing. He could give us more excitment, but then he'd get hit more, if you had a choice I think you'd do the same, why get hit if you don't have to? It hurts!

Yeah, that's essentially what I said and that's completely fine for him to make that choice. But along with that comes some criticism. The point is to entertain the fans, albeit his skills do that, just not as much as someone like Pacquiao as he takes risks and tries his best to get his opponent out of there.

It's funny though in regards to certain fans moaning about the way he fights as they still tune in! The guy is the biggest draw in boxing by a pretty big distance. Only Pacquaio can somewhat compete in that regard.

I suppose being called the P4P No. 1 helps greatly in drawing in viewers.

It's a shame that the casuals get drawn in to some of his fights, which end up being terrible as he's far superior to his opponent, and it leaves them scratching their heads why they paid £15 for it. If they weren't such sheep following what TV tells them is the biggest and best fight, and tuned in for say, Pacqiuao v Marquez, they'd leave much happier customers.
