He is arguably in the Top 100. After about 80, there are dozens of guys who are very close. He was a great fighter.

The great Azumah Nelson was "The Professor". From Ghana, he is considered second to the great Dick Tiger as one of the best fighters out of Africa. Not a top 50 all-time great, but a top 100 pound per pound fighter in my book. Around position #80 to 90 range is where I'd place him.

Can clearly remember Azumah's visits to the UK.....his fight with Cowdell (one of the first I saw as a young kid) was an absolute take down job and it is probably worth reminding ourselves that Pat was not some European 'gimme' having gone 15 rounds with Sanchez in Houston for a SD.

He boxed beautifully against McDonnell as well and Jim was a guy who was only just short of world champion class.

A fight with Mitchell would have been superb and settled many discussions on the board about Africa's finest....lots of folk think Azumah would have smashed Mitchell but I am not so sure.

One of the reasons I so admire Nelson - and yes, Mitchell as well - is that they were both champions in transit who had to fight (at best) on neutral soil (or at worse) in the other fellas backyard. Their big wins are on the road and they never enjoyed the luxury of a regular homewtown defence.

With Azumah it was economics - fighting in Ghana could not pay the bills.
In Mitchell's case it was politics, a white South African forced to ply his trade elsewhere.

Nelson beating Fenech in Australia was an incredible performance and especially as Fenech is widely regarded to have edged Azumah in their first fight. That result 'Down Under' cemented Azumah's greatness for me; a long way from home and against a bull of guy who had all the momentum with him from the first fight...but Nelson previals and silences the crowd.

Nelson is top 10 featherweight of all time in my opinion. That is saying a whole lot given the talent we've seen at that weight. He was special.

I certainly couldn't think of ten featherweights I am positive would beat him head to head, and I can only think of a total maser boxer mover like Pep who might handle him comfortably. I think he'd give Barrera hell, smash Danny Lopez up, and the dude who gave Sanchez hell beats Pedrosa too IMO, just to give some exampless.

He was a great fighter no doubt but I thought he boxed poorly in the McDonnell fight, just marching forward with no real thought in what he was doing, he did eventually walk McDonnell down in the end though
