Post by Deadendgeneration »

Going to run the Guangzhou marathon next year. Got 11 months to train for it so should be ok. Still summer is going to be fornicating horrible to run in.

Anyone done 1? Any advice?

I've done a half and struggled for the last 2 miles but I'll give you my amateur advice :P
I will say that you need to chop up the training and make sure you use short speed training too. Just running 10 miles every other night ain't the way to go. I would check the online training plans (Runner's World one is good). They give you a good balance of speed, endurance and strenght training etc.

Diamond Weapon is a good guy to ask about this by the way.

Cheers for the advice. I checked a few training schedules, and all the beginner ones, even for half marathons, assumed you had already been running x per week for y months. I've not done all that much running over the last few months. Did 5.5 miles in 46 minutes a few nights ago and will go out again tonight.

I did a half marathon a few years ago, but I was just doing one big run a week to prepare for that and had never gone past 10 miles come race day.

Hope is to firstly just finist, secondly go under 4 hours.

29:34 for 4.02miles. Went off a bit quick and the third mile was a bit of a struggle but managed to finish strong. Really pushed myself to get under 30 minutes and felt almost woozy once I'd finished.

That's good going fella, I'm 30 for 4 miles myself so already you're kicking my arse. By the way download Strava on your phone as it's a cheap alternative to Garmin watches etc as it free. it uses your GPS and gives you time, calories burned, distances, splits etc. If you do a regular run that others do you'll see times for other runners and you can see how well you are doing. It's good fun as it happens.
I never used to be one for carrying anything with me but with a belt round my belly or an arm one you soon forget it's there.
Even sader i got one of those hand grip water bottles :OhYes:

Strava isn't available in China :(

Had a lazy few days then blasted out 10km this evening in 51 minutes. Had to stop at traffic lights a few times which slowed me down a little but still I'm happy enough with the time.

Hmm so done a few more runs since. Got the 10km just under 50minutes and tonight did 7.73miles in 1:09:29. It was supposed to be a slow run just adding distance and not worrying about time, but I ended up doing it in almost exactly the pace I'm aiming to do the marathon in. It felt pretty slow when I was out there though and I could have easily gone another couple of miles.
