Who can cause a stir by winning a title in 2014

Post by 80/20 »

Im sure its not out of order to say Stuey Hall was an unlikley World Champ this time last year, so with that in mind what are your thoughts on fighters that could win a title in 2014 ?

Good topic !

Difficult to come up with many British candidates - far easier to envisage those who will try and fail. Fwank, in his recent TV interview, said his fighters basically treaded water in 2013 and in 2014 he is going to go for it, and will be disappointed if he doesn't have at least 2 world champs by the end of the year.

I predict the first Brit to win a world title in 2014 will be Butler, vs Hall. If Fwank can make Hall vs Butler in Liverpool in March I would expect the belt to change hands.

I can see Groves and Frampton winning worlds title in 2014. Martin Murray will, if you could the heavily diluted version of the WBA belt he is fighting for in March. That doesn't really count though I suppose.

Kell Brook will definitely challenge for a world title in 2014, I think he is good enough to win a title.

I can see Kevin Mitchell and Jamie McDonnell both challenging for world titles in 2014. Mitchell is #7 with the IBF and Vazquez is their champ, I would give a motivated Mitchell (with home advantage) a 50/50 chance of winning.

Lee Selby is now 6th by the WBC so he should be challenging for a world title in maybe the second half of the year.

I hope Brian Rose is victorious but don't think he will be.

Tyson Fury and Derek Chisora's only excuse for not facing each other would be world title fights of their own, but there is going to be a very long queue of challengers wanting to take the WBC title off the winner of Stiverne/Arreola, and they may have to wait their turn towards the back end of the year.

Don't think anyone would be particularly shocked by DeGale but I reckon he gets one before Groves does

Sam Soliman winning a world title would be interesting.

Degale.....tbh I wasn't overly sold on him in his last fight. He's certainly no second coming of PBF even though it looks like he tries to emulate him. Probably still got some learning in him though, and he did get the job done too.
Last time Degale impressed me was v. Paul Smith, which was very impressive to me.

My tip for possibly having a top career in the sport is a foreign heavyweight who has yet to turn pro ...

Filip Hergovic ... seriously watch this lad ... when he turns pro he will do well for himself.

If he gets the Sturm fight i think he takes the belt home. (as he should have done last time)

*i do think he'd lose it in 2014 also*

Why would he get his fourth shot? I think he will become a gatekeeper in 2014.

Brian Rose is more than capable of winning a world title and he gets a lot of negative press due to style etc. Cant see him getting blown out in 2 (barker) 6 (bellew) when he does step up to the plate i can see him giving andrade a difficult night and the fight going the distance.

I fully expect Frampton to win a world title belt in 2014....especially when you consider what The Jackal achieved against Martinez and the way Kiko has now become a credible (if not great) world champ in his own right. The shock factor for me would be if Carl did not win a title.

It is genuinely hard to see anyone causing a proper stir/upset like Hall did in 2014 - Rocky stuff like that does not that often unfortunately - but I am going to stick my neck on the line and suggest that Brook might come good. Kell can be as frustrating as hell sometimes, but there's real talent there as well and he deserves a shot at Porter, which is a winnable fight.

I don't agree that he deserves a shot, but i think it will end up Sturm giving him a rematch. Would certainly sell well in Germany after there last bout and Sturm knows it's very winnable.

Like with most things I'll probably be totally wrong, but it's only a gameshow..

I like these kind of threads I think Stephen Smith will be managed towards a world title shot at somepoint next year.

Kell Brook - he has the beating of Porter or Maidana on his day
Lee Selby - think he will come good against better opposition
Brian Rose - frustrate Andrade and use his skills to win on points
Paul Butler - think Frank will put him in with Stuey Hall then winner fights McDonnell
Jamie McDonnell - think he beats Hall again but Butler be a real good 50/50 fights
James Degale - Beats Bika for me using his skills and ringcraft
George Groves - beats Stieglitz, Bika. Don't think Froch will take a rematch as to dangerous
Martin Murray - If Golovkin is made super champ he takes regular title

Barker had an injury and Belle fought a KO king. I'm sure if Rose fought Kirkland or Canelo he wouldn't last 6 rounds, he doesn't have enough power to keep fighters off him no matter how good his boxing is.

Its a long shot but Olympian Ryota Murata after just a handful of fights (two so far) could win a weak version of the Middleweight title, looks like he's being fast tracked.

Genuine question who's Frampton going to take a world belt off? Quigg gets Martinez takes the IBF of the table. That leaves Rigo and Santa Cruz, realistically at this stage does he beat either of them?

If Quigg beats Martinez and I don't think he does, then Frampton will be mandatory before the end of the year for either if he doesn't fight Martinez next. I think he beats Santa Cruz anyway, Santa Cruz is a bit one dimensional and I don't think he's brilliant on the back foot.

He's need to fight a final eliminator to become mandatory, would he take 75-25 to fight Quigg in Manchester? I agree Santa Cruz is beatable but has Frampton had enough top level experience to do it? They need to form a proper plan then go after it rather than rely on a lot of luck. He's horribly inactive for me.

As someone said about Frampton, who do you see Smith taking a title off? As far as I can see he's only ranked by the WBC and WBO. Anyone really give him a chance against Miura or Garcia?

He wouldn't have to go to Manchester, if the fight happens, it's in Belfast, that's the only place it makes financial sense, regardless of TV channel. It should be remembered that neither man holds a world title, although Quigg and Hearn are attempting to con the public into believing he does.

Quigg does hold a title, however dodgy it is. The fight would probably make more financial sense in Manchester, too due to the size of the arena.

Tell you who may get one; Tyson Fury -the division is wide open now; in 6 months after a good win he could get a go.
