I've read about Bartley Gorman and the so called "St Legers Day Massacre". Did this really happen and was it named that? I found a lot of stuff in that book to be far fetched and with all the Donny guys on the other thread thought I'd ask.

The St Leger is a huge week in the racing calendar, there's a lot of travellers & Irish in town that week. The week before the races I believe it's bloodstock week too.

Sorry, I don't know a deal about it; I read the book and spoke to Bob Gaskin; he drinks in the little Plough from time to time; he said it was very exaggerated; I think only Gorman and his people called it the St Leger Massacre! I imagine that there's still a fair bit of challenge fights that goes on around the Leger but someone who has seen a few of these fights said that Appleby Horse Fair is a place where the pecking order can be sorted. Doncaster has got a really big traveller population, there are quite a few sites and the biggest name I think still is Joe Boy Gaskin who is mentioned in the book; he's knocking on a bit and I think he's on the slide though I'd not say it to his face.

I like the part in the Bartley Gorman book where he has a fight in a pub and misses the man with a punch and knocks down a wall. I identified with that as it's happened to me.

I remember Danny Shenton being the main guy in Doncaster and his Sheffield counterpart being Dennis Hobson snr

My Dad was always alright with Danny. Sort of knew him I think. Similar generation.

Fella from Thorne was rumoured to go up and fight the travellers for a grand a pop, I want to say Tommy Cunningham but I may be off or misremembering.

The story in my family is that my Great Uncle Ralph (Dodie) was the cock of Doncaster in his time, he was a big bugger and loved drinking in the rough houses round the markets in the 40s I suppose. Woodcock would never fight him in the street, but then, why would he.

I've been dropped twice with body shots during my brief 'sparring' at the local club here. Got up, but fought like Gonch's Duffle Bag for the rest of the night.

I thought it was exaggerated. I've asked other folk from down that way and they never heard of any of it. St Legers Day Massacre hahaha.

But I was born in 73 so a kid at its height. Just remember being told not to go out in town when I was 17/18 during that week.

Mate, it was massive. The place was buzzing: travellers, professional gamblers, professional idiots, hard men, showmen, piss artists. You name it, they were all there on Race Week. I remember eeing Mercs and Rolls Royces parked right the way up Bennetthorpe - and that was when I was a little kid, when only the seriously rich could afford them.

I also remember gyspsies playing 'chicken' with Escort vans on the straight mile by the side of the racecourse (ie 2 vans drive at full pelt towards each other, and it's let's see who swerves first)

I worked in a town centre pub in the late 70s early 80s in the market place and must say race week was very entertaining if nothing else lol

Bore off with Doncaster !!!! It's like being a football follower & wanting to know stenhousemuirs results!
