Old School Revamp.
Imagine if you will, we returned to say 10 weight divisions over night, its like 1970, with one champion in each division.
A fighter can be champion in two divisions, a la Armstrong if you like.
Heavyweight
Light-Heavyweight
Middleweight
Light Middle
Welter
Light Welter
Lightweight
Feather
Bantam
Fly
Who would you install as champions in those ten divisions?

Re: Old School Revamp.
I would install myself as champion in every weight division and then lose half of the titles on the scales and not defend my mandatory for the other half.
Then id be the first person ever to hold a world title in every weight division and never lose on in the ring.

So, when we refer to folk as current for former champions it should be these types of fighters.

Agreed. All others are merely "belt holders".DavidPayne wrote:So, when we refer to folk as current for former champions it should be these types of fighters.
Re: Old School Revamp.
What's with all the hype about Gamboa? He's lazy, a dwarf and I don't think he's anywhere near as good as he is made out to be, especially when he can't be arsed to train. As for having 10 weights, that would just be dangerous, the way fighters balloon up after the weigh in now would only be made worse either by them being forced to drain further, or having to move up and be vastly outweighed by another fighter.
Re: Old School Revamp.
Martinez not considered due to inactivity, but Ward is given the Light Heavy? He's been less active!stujones wrote:Heavyweight - Wlad

What about Gamboa as well? One fight at lightweight 6 months ago and he's only boxed twice in the last 2 1/2 years.earsjohn wrote:Martinez not considered due to inactivity, but Ward is given the Light Heavy? He's been less active!stujones wrote:Heavyweight - Wlad

Ward might have been inactive, but he has fought more recently and beat "the man" in the division.... the alternatives are not as clear cut as it is at Middleweight. You could make a compelling case for Stevenson, Kovalev or Hopkins (I guess Stevenson is slightly ahead of the others)... at Middleweight its either Martinez or GGG - no one else really. Martinez has been scraping by and GGG has been dominating - so if awarding a new title belt I would give it to the fighter who I think is most likely to win that fight.
Weird cause currently I have Martinez #1, GGG #2 - but think that would change if they fought. In awarding a new title I would give it to who I think is the best in the division that his holding a world title status currently. At Light eavy, not sure who is.... so.... hence the Ward call (who would fight at Light heavy if there was no super middle).
Lightweight - yeah Gamba aint fought at in a while, but not sure who else you can call the "man" in the division.... Burns???? Whats the alternative..... Broner??? I did consider that but thought I'd get crucified.

Re: Old School Revamp.
Broner's a Welterweight. For me #1 at Lightweight is a toss up between Burns, Vazquez and Abril, before the last two fights it would have been Burns, but the poor performances mean he isn't for me.stujones wrote:Ward might have been inactive, but he has fought more recently and beat "the man" in the division.... the alternatives are not as clear cut as it is at Middleweight. Re: Old School Revamp.
Agree on Broner, and can see what you are saying - Burns, Vasquez and Abril good, solid, but I think even though Gamboa hasn't proven himself - I'd give a NEW title to the fighter who holds a belt and I think would win in a fight off.... for me its Gamboa. I've only done that when its not clear cut who is the best out of the belt holders based on achievement etc.expe wrote:Broner's a Welterweight. Re: Old School Revamp.
Gamboa's too small for me, Vazquez beats him easily, Burns at his best jabs his head off and he'd have trouble with Abril who's rangy and elusive like Vazquez.stujones wrote:Agree on Broner, and can see what you are saying - Burns, Vasquez and Abril good, solid, but I think even though Gamboa hasn't proven himself - I'd give a NEW title to the fighter who holds a belt and I think would win in a fight off.... for me its Gamboa.
