Re: Tony Tucker v. Gerry Cooney
I like Cooney. More aggressive, harder punching, greater size and skills that were equally sound. Probably goes the distance

Tucker by stoppage in the mid rounds. He had faster hands and a solid chin, Gerry just couldn't take a shot well enough to last for me.
Re: Tony Tucker v. Gerry Cooney
I'd take Tucker to win a stoppage as well.
Re: Tony Tucker v. Gerry Cooney
Yeah, I'm with Saad on this one.
Cooney's 'management' would be wise to pass on this fight and stick with old fellas just looking for one last pay day.
Like Frank Bruno, he looked great against guys who were just there to be hit.

Cooney would be the aggressor from start to finish but i think it would come down to overall boxing ability based fundementals and Tucker would win, mainly by relying on effective tricky counterpunching. Tucker with a close but relatively clear cut UD win in a mostly Uneventfull and frustrating disappointing bout. I can just picture the fans booing away for the most part. This fight would be highly frustrating for Cooney for certain ! ![[icon_e_geek.gif] :geek:](./images/smilies/icon_e_geek.gif)

So Tucker would fight like Cory Spinks? I have a hard time seeing that. I agree that Cooney would be frustrated by suffering another stoppage loss.AngryGoon38 wrote:Cooney would be the aggressor from start to finish but i think it would come down to overall boxing ability based fundementals and Tucker would win, mainly by relying on effective tricky counterpunching. Re: Tony Tucker v. Gerry Cooney
If the fight is scheduled for 10 rounds and Cooney shows up in good form, he might very well pull off a decision. Tucker was durable and had decent boxing skills, but he was also non aggressive in a lot of his fights and quite often played it safe. Cooney's boxing skills were better than average and his tendency to go for it would get the judges' attention. While I wouldn't bet on Gerry forcing a stoppage here, his power would still have a factor in that it could keep Tucker at bay and make him less apt to taking chances. Gerry was not as fragile as you so often make him out to be either. So Tucker would fight like Cory Spinks? I have a hard time seeing that. A huge guy coming aggressively at Tony Tucker is going to eat a lot of big counter shots. Personally I don't see Gerry Cooney taking the punishment James Broad did.
Tucker TKO.

Re: Tony Tucker v. Gerry Cooney
Broad was a 242 lb lard ass in that fight, didn't have the power that Cooney had and wasn't on his level. Tony Still had to settle for a decision in that match and I wouldn't describe Broad as being any more durable than Cooney was.A huge guy coming aggressively at Tony Tucker is going to eat a lot of big counter shots. Re: Tony Tucker v. Gerry Cooney
Broad was much more durable than Gerry Cooney. You probably don't understand this because you think David Haye is a 'southpaw' and Ron Lyle a 'light hitter'.

I never called Ron Lyle a light hitter. And if you have to resort to making references to claims I've never made, then I think I've comfortably won the argument.Tuan_Jim wrote:Broad was much more durable than Gerry Cooney. Let's not forget, you also don't rate Mike Weaver as a puncher either.
I guess Ron Lyle and Mike Weaver don't have the requisite boxrec kayo ratio that impresses you so much with the likes of Vitali Klitschko.

Gerry was quite fragile against this kind of opposition. I know you love him, no need to have the same conversation every time he comes up.drunkenpiper36 wrote:If the fight is scheduled for 10 rounds and Cooney shows up in good form, he might very well pull off a decision. Oh I find it necessary to revisit this discussion when people who very likely judge him for his fights that occurred after he was semi retired and answering the door in his bathrobe.Gerry was quite fragile against this kind of opposition.
