Burns VS Crawford Chief Support bout

Post by David McAllister »

With Stevie Simmons vs Wadi Camacho of the card who would you like to see as the chief support? I know most of the Scots on here or going to watch would rather have a Scottish fighter as chief support but who realistically could fight in a big enough fight to be chief support, here are a couple that I thought of and put on esb but I 'd like to hear the thoughts of the posters on here:

Iain Butcher is fighting the day before so would be fit enough, but could you make a big fight for him on that show?

John Thain could maybe get a 10 rounder against a decent opponent but I think he was injured, even without injury I'm sure promoter issues would stop him fighting on the bill.

Jon Slowey recently won the Scottish title but he won't be available for this show.

David Brophy might be fighting in a 10 rounder (think I read that on here) but I don't think the opponent would be of the class that it would keep people happy to be the main supporting bout.

Jordan McCorry vs Michael Roberts would be an interesting fight, Jordan just won the Scottish Title and Michael is looking for the Celtic Title. This fight would be a decent fight but I'm not convinced it would be chief support.

Willie Limond would probably be the biggest name that could fill the main undercard by defending his Commonwealth Title but I don't think he would get on the bill due to promoter issues.

Craig McEwan vs John Ryder has been mentioned, it could be made because Craig has signed with Alex Morrison. Them having an eliminator for the British Title would be a decent clash of styles and also be a good fight. Craig has fought decent names and John looked good against BJS.

Scot Cardle could also maybe get some sort of eliminator and he has been used on a lot of Matchroom bills in Scotland.

Can anyone think of any better Scottish fighters to fill the Chief Supporting slot?

Does it really have to be a Scottish fighter? I'm sure that South of the border fans who will be watching it on Sky would maybe rather just have a really good undercard fight so I'd like to hear fights they think could be made in the time frame that would make the show more than just a main event fight?

John Murray vs Kevin Mitchell 2 would be a great fight for neutral fans but it might just be too late to get this bout on.

Would be an interesting bout, I think Scott would have to be in training already to make the weight.

#i heard it was signed

i dont care if the UC has scottish fighters on it ,dotn get me wrong i would love it ,but i wouldent knock back a decent fight because one of the fighters "aint scottish"

ideally we could have Groves/Froch II as the main undercard fight

but i dont think we will get that ..

for the record i dont think the undercard is as bad some folk are banging on about good roster of loca fighters ...

Don't know what Scott Harrison's situation is at the moment but I'm sure it was on twitter that he had been sparring a fair amount of rounds recently

The vast majority of those fights are not big enough or because the fighter is with another fighter.

The only scottish fighters that are at a level to be chief support for this bill are: Simmons, Simpson, Limond and McEwan. The rest are still at scottish/celtic title level.

Does anybody know why it is exclusively Morrison fighters on Rickys undercard? Does Morrison make Rickys Promotor sign a contract that says that it he is only allowed to use his fighters?

Its a shame because some good scottish boxers are missing out on fighting on these big bills and tv exposure.

I feel sorry for Simmons, he comes across has a really nice guy, and know how much he wanted to destroy Camacho.
We (Chris Keane) offered to stand in @ late notice & fight Wadi Camacho but Eddie said no, not in Scotland, I assume it didn't make sense to him with putting a genuine good 50/50 fight featuring 2 of the top 10 Cruisers & biggest punchers in the division to face each other up there to entertain the paying public has neither are Scottish.

But I assume it makes enough sense lets say to put Martin j Ward & Anthony Crolla on the bill, no doubt against 2 poor imports, Ward & Crolla must be Scottish

*(I only used these fighters has a example, nothing against either fighter, Crolla is actually friend of mine)*

The shows stacked with talent!
Burns v Crawford
Joshua
Ward
Simpson
Brophy
Crolla
Roberts
To be fair I'd pay the entrance fee for the main event alone easy!

Its one thing having talent on it but how many will be in competitive fights? Burns fight probably at best.

It like going to a movie and saying the first 2 hours are crap but that doesnt matter because the ending is good.

Yh top of the bill is a quality fight Billy so don't disagree with you mate, but for people to pay for a show for one competitive fight on this card, especially after the brilliant undercard fight in Cardiff is crazy.
I think the problem for the paying public is they are being fed a undercard of one way traffic fights, There's no real reason for there not to be a good genuine 50/50 fight on this undercard aswell.

I remember when Matchroom got the exclusive contract with Sky it was on the basis of having 3 or 4 top fights on the undercard so that it would be a full night of entertained. Having poor undercards was apparently one of the criticisms launched at the previous promoter.
This bill now features Matchroom connected fighters against no -hopers.
Can anybody tell me what is so different about this show on Sky, with all the shows previously put on by FW.
I'm not defending anyone but is this not an example of going back down the same old route.

What I also find puzzling is that Matchroom , under Barry Hearn, seemed to have a very close relationship with Tommy Gilmour ,putting on several shows together, and yet, since they signed Ricky Burns Gilmours fighters don't get a look in ??? I wonder why that is ???

We could have had several Scottish v Scottish fights to keep the fans happy similar to Rees v Buckland.

Ronnie Clark would fight Michael Roberts or John Simpson im sure, Only thing would maybe be the notice now I think, Wont happen because hes signed with Gilmour haha, Iain Butcher should be on this card, Eddie Hearn says showcase Scottish Boxing and yet doesnt use this young man. Unreal!

Thing is Eddie could make the fights if he wanted to.

He only has Scottish one fighter signed .

It's not that there isn't any talent up here ,or ticket sellers.

Go figure .

Well if you look at the matchroom website it only has Burns listed apart from Cardle, but he operates down south, unless you would like to correct me?

I think Burns v Crawford is a very good fight but the undercard is really looking weak. Matchroom have Bellew, Brook, Mitchell, 3 Smith Brothers, Rocky Feilding and Yafai all on the same bill. That's a proper card. Unless most of the TBAs are decent the undercard isn't great.

Most of them against no hopers though.

I haven't saw the opponents right enough. Am sure Hearn will make a decent fight on Glasgow bill.

This is my big fear. If Burns gets beat when will be the next televised boxing show from Scotland? Who will be the promoter ,who will be the star attraction.

We were lucky in that there wasn't too big a gap between Scott Harrison falling away and Burns appearing. Whose the next fighter who would attract the TV companies. Answers on the back of a postage stamp please.

I think the last TV names before Harrison might have been Paul Weir or Gary Jacobs.

To keep Sky or Boxntn returning north of the border we need someone who will come out the crowd - I don't see anyone at the moment. If Burns loses we're in for the 10 years of famine!!

I can understand that point, and it is a fair point
