Making excuses for a loss!
Making excuses for a loss!
Hi All
Just reading the Tyson Autobiography at the moment...I have read many many books on Boxing and boxers and it seems to me that a fighter has never lost due to his opponent being superior to him. There was always a reason. For example Tyson, who as a fighter I love lost to Douglas - wasnt prepared was humping Japanese women all day and night ;Holyfield- Evander's heads made him dizzy and caused him to black out. Lewis - doing coke and humping excessively in the lead up.
Holmes was 'rusty' when he lost to Mike. Ali had a long lay off prior to the first Frazier fight..excuses excuses excuses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always remember that in boxing, there's no excuse for not having an excuse.

Human nature isn't it, blame something or someone else, not isolated to boxers
Re: Making excuses for a loss!
I think it's a confidence issue. Without an excuse, if the other fighter is just better, belief in oneself is lost.

Frazier had some great ones; against Foreman he shouldn't have worn contacts! Lost to Buster Mathis in the Olympic Trials because Mathis' trunks were too high!

Yeah, Buster's trunks were pretty high. Pretty much anything below the neck was a low blow.Ambling Alp II wrote:Frazier had some great ones; against Foreman he shouldn't have worn contacts! Lost to Buster Mathis in the Olympic Trials because Mathis' trunks were too high!

Small details can make a huge difference especially when we're talking about evenly matched top athletes.

I think Joe simply needed to take George seriously leading up to their fight. He and his handlers clearly hadn't prepared him properly for the type of opponent that he faced that night. You could tell that from the flesh around his waist.Ambling Alp II wrote:Frazier had some great ones; against Foreman he shouldn't have worn contacts! Roy Jones Jr. had some good ones. Did you know he lost the third Tarver fight because he didn't want his dad getting the credit?

Actually, the 2nd fight was because of the contacts.
The first time was because he "just wasn't right."

You mean the one-eyed fat man version of Frazier? Have you ever watched the second Foreman-Frazier fight? To say he was fat would almost be kind.scallum wrote:What about the second timeThe Great John L wrote:I think Joe simply needed to take George seriously leading up to their fight. Ironically in the post match interview a humbled Tyson was offering no excuses. I think he said 'He's just a very good fighter'. And even when asked about the headbuts he said 'I probably butted him too'. Once his sycophants and hangers on got into him then of course his tune changed.
Re: Making excuses for a loss!
He was a Jekyll and Hyde character no doubt. I think, I hope he has got it together now. Reading his book which is quite sensationalistic but I guess that is what sells.Flump wrote:Ironically in the post match interview a humbled Tyson was offering no excuses. Tyson also lost to Danny Williams because of a bad knee....

Andrew Golota lost with Riddick Bowe because "he was raising his belt" (or according to Conan "he was raising his genitalia").
Try to find something better than that!

Joshua Clottey on the effects of a traditional Ghanaian stew before fighting Pacquiao:
"When I ate after the weighing I was ‘running,"The midnight I went to toilet almost like four times. In the morning, I went to toilet almost like three times. When we went to the dressing room, I went to toilet like three times."

Perfect antidote to this thread, jump to 1:50. Classy guy.
It's difficult not to warm to Richie, innit?
I mean, that moment alone guarantees him Good Guy Greg status, worthy of some sort of Innernetz meme, but that bit in the 2008 Olympics where they cut away from the boxing to start the dressage or whatever horsey-thing it was, & he swears & mumbles about how no-one in their right mind would wanna watch horse-jumping...

Muhammad Ali 'cried' that Kenny broke his jaw in Round 2, and that's why he lost.
Kenny 'correctly' stated that was in Round 11.
Kenny, "I felt the bones crush in Round 11. Like when you step on a Walnut."

Clay always brought the excuses with him.
