Gary Cornish changes coach
At the weekend I was speaking with Laurie Redfearn who coached Gary from day one and I was surprised to hear that he was no longer coaching big Gary.
Gary has now decided to have his strength and conditioning coach Paul Geddes take control of all aspects of his training. I really can't remember Paul boxing but I know he has been instrumental with the conditioning of all amateur and professional boxers at Inverness City boxing club for the last few years.
I just wonder if it was a wise choice to get rid of a coach who has a wealth of experience with over 50 years in boxing? I just think when the going gets tough for Gary he might miss the added experience that Laurie would bring to the party?
I've seen Paul at a couple of the professional shows and I'm sure he will have picked up experience during this time but I'd just like hear what other people think of Gary's decision?

Re: Gary Cornish changes coach
Strength and conditioning coaches should be for just that, not the boxing side of things, doesn't really make sense to me unless he just wants to be big, strong and fit, which I suppose is enough to beat a lot of heavies these days, but if he's changing trainer, it should be to someone who'll improve him technically, not physically.
Re: Gary Cornish changes coach
they can't teach technique and many trainers can do the strength & conditioning themselves, seems a bad move to me, mind you a lot of boxers balloon in weight between fights and don't do any technical work in between fights, so the training camp is used mostly for getting fit and losing weight.David McAllister wrote:At the weekend I was speaking with Laurie Redfearn who coached Gary from day one and I was surprised to hear that he was no longer coaching big Gary.

It's how things evolve sometimes. Geddes is a young, fit man, who does all Gary's padwork with him. He also does his conditioning. Let's be honest, that's pretty much all the lad does most of the time, he doesn't get much sparring and unless he moves or goes on the road, that isn't going to change. In an ideal world he'd have a trainer and a conditioner, all the sparring he needs and the skills of Pernell Whittaker but, in an ideal world, Natalie Ibruglia would be sat on my knee and I'd not be typing this message. Cornish has a good trade and job and would, in my view, be making a bold move jacking that in to box full-time. If he keeps plugging away and eventually gets a shot at the British title (unless you Scots vote 'Yes'), he'll have had a good second career as a boxer.

Having seen Cornish fight a few times, it probably makes no difference who's training him. They can build up his record as much as they like, digging up more dead bodies to lose to him, but I'm not convinced he's really any good. Best of luck to him though, sounds like he is going to need it too.

Maybe Laurie a felt a younger person would benefit Gary, after all the only way to gain experience is to do it yourself, good luck to him

That's not the impression I got from him. I understand that you get experience by doing things yourself but you had a very good apprenticeship with Peter being involved in fights at the highest level, although Paul was working alongside Laurie they have not been involved in any real crisis so has no experience of how to change things in a bad spell in a fight, when it happens with Gary Imo having Laurie in the corner would be invaluable.billy nelson wrote:Maybe Laurie a felt a younger person would benefit Gary, after all the only way to gain experience is to do it yourself, good luck to him

He's going no where eny way, let's be honest
Re: Gary Cornish changes coach
Bit harsh. He's obviously being protected but most fighters are if they sell a few tickets. If he gets a shot at the British he'll have had a decent career and the talent pool in the UK isn't exactly deep. Obviously he'd be in serious bother vs a Joshua or Hugie Fury but it's not impossible to imagine him getting a Commonwealth or British title fight vs a Sexton, McDermott, etc type down the line. He'd be a live underdog if prepared properly in those kind of fightsChamp1982 wrote:He's going no where eny way, let's be honest

Re: Gary Cornish changes coach
the quality of opposition is really dire now for someone with so many fights under his belt.
the problem is he is fairly average and dsnt bring enough power along with his size
Richard Towers was similar....protected and then scared to death by Greg toney...after that they stuck around for the browne fight and now hes gone from the scene
cornish may go the same way

Re: Gary Cornish changes coach
Really surprised at this I met Gary and his coach when they stayed up in hartlepool after sparring with Chris burton remember his coach a real top bloke and I think Gary was quiet good with the right fights and people behind him could see him do somethink not sayin he would be a world champion sad story of loyalty once again

They seem to be in accord that Cornish is perhaps not very good. It's a site for boxing fans to post their views, after all ?!Black Sam Bellamy wrote:Whats the point of all these shithouse comments ?
Re: Gary Cornish changes coach
thing is people are just fannys, they would rather see a fighter being thrown to the wolves, rather than let him bide his time and pick up the sport and learn it before challenging for a titleBlack Sam Bellamy wrote:Whats the point of all these shithouse comments ?
thing is you could understand any comments if Cornish or his team were hyping themselves and were all over twitter and that, but the fact is he is not.

I don't know if getting rid of his trainer is a good or bad idea but IMO Cornish needs to add a bit more muscle so working on that full-time could be a positive. He does have a lot of journeyman on his record but you have to remember he didn't have any amateur career and hardly gets any sparring so it'd be difficult for Tommy to take the risk and put him in a hard fight too early. Even if he fights for the British title that'd make history and the best chance of doing that is staying undefeated.

Re: Gary Cornish changes coach
He did have some amateur fights, only 9 mind you as he struggled to find opposition. I don't see anything wrong with bringing a fighter along slowly, he's only 26 and it's better to get rounds under your belt than blast everyone out in a round (similar to my thoughts on Hughie Fury). Cornish is a big bloke and his jab isn't too bad but to be honest I've not seen anything that makes me think he will be a major force in the world heavyweight division. His lack of punch would be a concern but he appears to be trying to do the right things, keeping himself in shape and fit which is a good thing. Good luck to him, even if he is Scottish :-)adam426 wrote: he didn't have any amateur career and hardly gets any sparring so it'd be difficult for Tommy to take the risk and put him in a hard fight too early.

As soon as he fights someone that isn't Latvian, a Cruiserweight, 5ft 9in (and has a winning record) he's getting chinned.
He is the Scottish Tom Dallas.
exactly, gary cornish is another hype job that will get kod when he steps up. tommy gilmour will keep him away from anyone who can fight until he cant make money off him anymore. would love to see stevie simmons ko him lol
