Post by stevedoc »

i was just thinking of this bill and looking back it now seems strange shall we say that mcguigan was joint top of the bill if not top of the bill while amongst such legends.

are there any other bills like this

Well, I'm always partial to the Carnival of Champions staged September 15, 1978 at the New Orleans Superdome.
It was headed by Ali regaining the title from Leon Spinks.

And the undercard wasn't too shabby with Mike Rossman winning the light heavyweight title from Victor Galindez and "Little Red" Lopez defending his featherweight title against Juan Malvarez.

The opener was Jorge Lujan defending the bantamweight championship against Albert Davila.

I think this card surpasses the McGuigan, Hearns, Duran triple-hitter (the Hearns bout against Mark Medal was just a match designed to wet the appetite for a rumored rematch with Hagler) and best of all, it was televised free on prime-time network television.
Nowdays, they'd charge $75 for it on PPV.
