Martin Gethin vs Derry Mathews
Gethin puts his British LW belt on the line against Mathews this weekend, how do you seeing panning out?
I have a sneaky feeling Derry might stop Martin,Gethin hasn't fought since getting stopped in a IBF eliminator against Ammeth Diaz which was nearly a year ago and Mathews has been active and has been in fairly good form bar maybe his last fight against Stephen Ormond, but Derry has also been looking pretty durable too which surprised me as i thought he was looking close to shot
Mathews KO 9

Good looking match up.
Gethins inactivity could go against him and Mathews form has been good over the last year. I think Mathews by points maybe late stoppage.

Re: Martin Gethin vs Derry Mathews
I've seen both and am not sure why the oddsmakers have this fight close. Am I not seeing something in Gethin that some are? Other than wear and tear on Mathews, I can't see where Martin has an edge.

Derry rounds 6-8 his power being the differance for me

Re: Martin Gethin vs Derry Mathews
reckon derry can put it together in what could be yet another exciting british lightweight encounter.
Re: Martin Gethin vs Derry Mathews
Derry has bad hands and Gethin is a machine, this could be a bad match for Matthews who is in hard every bout.

Yeah both Derrys hands went in the Ormond fight I believe: had to have surgery on both and his missus in Derrys own words "had to wipe his arse" for him. That's a worry but if he is 100% you'd mAke him a solid favourite.
Re: Martin Gethin vs Derry Mathews
hard to write Matthews off, the comebacks he's had. we thought he was finished ages ago yet he's returned to produce devastating, memorable and gutsy comebacks.

Apart from the one punch finish he looked shot against Coyle and he was slow, one paced and jaded looking against Ormond (he actually seemed to give up towards the back end) Gethin is nothing special but I think he'll be too lively for Matthews these days . .

Re: Martin Gethin vs Derry Mathews
Mathews can struggle when someone gets him to the body and Gethin is a pretty decent body puncher at this kind of level. I can't pick a winner.
Re: Martin Gethin vs Derry Mathews
he looked really sharp vs woodhouse though, and landed two of the punches of last year: the chopping right on Curtis, and that left hook vs coyle.Plum Duffet wrote:Apart from the one punch finish he looked shot against Coyle and he was slow, one paced and jaded looking against Ormond (he actually seemed to give up towards the back end) Gethin is nothing special but I think he'll be too lively for Matthews these days . .
coyle is a lively, bouncy & unorthodox guy so I can see why derry had trouble connecting. reckin gethin will be coming straight at derry and we have a chance to see the scouser's full repertoire (that we also saw in the first vs crolla).
expecting a strong performance by the warrior, here. Matthews to win a thriller.

Woodhouse was dead at the weight, Coyle has since been exposed by Brizuela, so I wouldn't read too much into Matthews beating those two.Autobarn wrote:he looked really sharp vs woodhouse though, and landed two of the punches of last year: the chopping right on Curtis, and that left hook vs coyle.Plum Duffet wrote:Apart from the one punch finish he looked shot against Coyle and he was slow, one paced and jaded looking against Ormond (he actually seemed to give up towards the back end) Gethin is nothing special but I think he'll be too lively for Matthews these days . .

I personally hope he gets chinned again and retires as he's promised, he's been involved in some good fights over the years but personally I can't stand the bloke. All that 'Dirty Derry' business years ago put me right off him.

That was years ago and the man is really sound; he is a decent bloke, doesn't act the big man, will box anyone, gives lots of respect to his opponents and travels to shows with his fans. There's nothing to not like about him - disliking someone for media bollocks from years ago is silly.

there's always a reason for someone losing. I give derry credit for 2 impressive and decisive KO wins over fierce opponents.Plum Duffet wrote:Woodhouse was dead at the weight, Coyle has since been exposed by Brizuela, so I wouldn't read too much into Matthews beating those two.Autobarn wrote:he looked really sharp vs woodhouse though, and landed two of the punches of last year: the chopping right on Curtis, and that left hook vs coyle.Plum Duffet wrote:Apart from the one punch finish he looked shot against Coyle and he was slow, one paced and jaded looking against Ormond (he actually seemed to give up towards the back end) Gethin is nothing special but I think he'll be too lively for Matthews these days . .

Re: Martin Gethin vs Derry Mathews
Tell that to John Simpson, 'Dirty' Derry split his scalp to the bone with a headbutt, gloated about it in the post fight interview, then started wearing the ridiculous 'Dirty' shorts in subsequent fights.

Re: Martin Gethin vs Derry Mathews
but when he came back after some humbling KO defeats, choi 1, Lindsay, ramogaodi, marsili & Lawton 1, he was in some tremendous battles and really showed he was more than just a bully vs crolla 1 & 2, rees 2, choi 2, woodhouse & coyle. Matthews has helped, on the grassroots level, to make lightweight the best and fiercest weight class in the country. this is a man who's reinvented himself.
I've really enjoyed what I'd term the "mature" stage of his career.
