Should Price take a Fury fight this Autumn?

Post by SteveDow »

http://www.worldboxingnews.net/news/201 ... title.html

Interesting to read the comments of Peter Fury about the possibility of a fight between Fury and Price after Chisora if (as seems likely Fury doesn't get a world title fight this year if he wins).

Question is though, would this be a good move for Price? Would his promotors want the fight this soon into his comeback?

Clearly the fight would be a risk but assuming Price would get a decent payday I think he should jump at the chance. Yes, there is a fair possibility he could lose but if he lands clean Fury will go. Could also see the fight selling out the MEN or the Echo Arena at least (even now) and so a similar payday may never come.

Fury should fight the man who stopped David Price twice

Easy fight to make

No point in Fury fighting Thompson. Too high risk and too little reward. From Fury's perspective the Price fight would make more sense financially and he may view it as potentially an easier fight.

It IS an easier fight.

That's fine, Price is still the harder puncher out of the two and for a guy as wide open as Fury that poses a problem.

What would do the most damage to his career at the moment, a decision loss to TT or being stopped be Price? Pretty obvious.

Boxing doesn't work like that just because boxer A beats boxer B and boxer B beats boxer C doesn't mean boxer A always beats boxer C.
If I were Price I would take the fight, financially it would make sense and he would get a very high ranking IF he won.

Maxsplit: Ok then, so would Bernard Hopkins have been an easier fight for Kelly Pavlik than Jermain Taylor in 2008 simply because Taylor beat Hopkins twice? Have you ever heard of the phrase "styles make fights"?.

The point is, Price could be viewed by Fury as an easier fight because Thompson has beaten him twice, however Price hits significantly harder than Fury and given Fury's propensity to go down when hit with a decent shot, Fury may be mistaken in viewing Price as an easier fight as there would be the ever-present danger that he may get caught.

Anyway, my question wasn't about Fury. It was about Price and whether he should take the fight.

I don't thiink Fury would take the fight, although the Sauerlands might put up a decent amount of money. In that case, I could see him taking it. If the Sauerlands put a bigger offer than he's going to get elsewhere, which is possible, then I could see the fight happening.

The answer depends on what is going on between Price's ears. If he is confident and has been doing some work to help him stay in the zone when under pressure he should go for it as it would be a great chance to kickstart his career and get a big KO. Any doubts though and he should carry on with the slow re-build.

They would be boxing for less than half what it was worth two years ago.

Hindsight is always crystal clear though.

Personally I'd have thought if (and it's a big if) fury gets past chisora, they should wait and see if one of them gets a world title before facing off.

Well Leapai was Wlads WBO mandatory and should Fury beat Chisora he will be his next one. Don't know how it works exactly but the standard is the mandatory is due once a year so no way will Fury get a world title fight until next Spring/Summer.

Wlad has to fight Pulev next and rightfully so Pulev became mandatory last August, Boxrec actually have that fight listed for September 6th. Wlad should win and then go after the WBC champion after that who knows.......

For me I don't think David Price can deal with Fury on the mental side he needs a couple of better fights to develop confidence. I think while Tyson stays unbeaten no one can get the better of him mentally.

That said Price is still capable of putting Fury away in 3 rounds like he always has been. Fury hasn't faced anyone of similar height with a monster right hand and has been floored by much lesser punchers hence still a risky fight.

I actuallly think Thompson would be a bit easier for Fury it will generate interest,a good build up and also Thompson is a contender who will come over to fight no issues what so ever. I can't see any better options ability wise who won't hesitate fighting Fury between a Wlad fight.

I always wondered why Fury, or should I say, his team, decided to relinquish the British and 'go in a different direction' when they could have earned decent dough for a Price fight.
Both still had plenty of time left to come back and get back in the mix after a defeat.

I'd be surprised if a Price/Fury fight was to take place any time soon.

I think Price would be bang up for it. The only time you see him a little angry is when Fury is mentioned.

I think if it doesn't happen soon it never will and whilst it would have made more money prior to Price losing, it'd still be the biggest payday either has had in their career so far. The Liverpool/Manchester rivalry would stoke the interest and I think it would sell out a big indoor arena very quickly. It's certainly a fight that would have more interest than Fury v Chisora in my view.

Price should try to beat a top 50 heavyweight before he thinks about fighting someone like Fury.

This fight would make more sense if Fury was coming off of a loss and Price had strung a few decent wins together.

If it is indeed true that team Fury is looking into this fight (for real this time), I think it makes sense for one real reason: INACTIVITY, nothing more, nothing less. Sure there is the promotional flare that Fury lost to Price in the amateurs, and its time to pay the Piper so to speak--- but Price has not demonstrated since Tony Thompson, that he has changed at all. He is still a head hunter, he's still facing inept opposition, and still doing the same old tactics in that ring. Maybe, a Fury fight, could bring out the best in him--- maybe he would rise to the occasion--- but I don't see it.

For team Fury, it's a tuneup fight--- because the IBF has ordered Klitschko to face Pulev, thus pushing back a possible Fury/Klitschko fight for the WBO title (that is, if Fury can beat Chisora in the rematch). That be two fights, over and done, before the end of the year--- and come 2015, Fury may engage in one more tuneup, and then battle Klitschko for his deserved title shot.

Price is similar to Klitschko in respects, and Price does generate alot of interest, especially in Liverpool. Now with Sauerland on his side, it would generate more money--- and who knows, a Fury/Price fight could also be for a "Super Duper" eliminator, for a trinket belt, and that alone would generate more money (at least domestically).

That being said... Fury wins, probably inside of five rounds.

Wlad vacates IBF, Pulev is given the belt, winner of Fury v Price is Pulev's first defence. Kalle sews up options on Fury - unless Chisora...

The mandatory doesn't get given the title if the champion vacates and Wlad won't vacate anyway.

This is the big factor. How confident Price is feeling is a bigger issue than whether Fury wants it.

As said above, just because Fury lost twice, doesn't necessarily mean Fury will whoop him. Unless Price isn't feeling it.

I always feel that once a fighter has shown the weaknesses that price has shown, it is a long, long way back from there. The stamina/gassing out issue plus the apparent mental deficiency and chin issues just add up to quite a large set of obstacles to overcome.

I dont see Wlad vacating. I think he wants to hold all 4 major belts.

Agree with your observation but if Price can land first I'm convinced he'd stop Fury. Fury can be hurt and has in the past been in big trouble against fighters with power that is nowhere near that of Price. It is a big if of course and it is equally likely that Price himself could be caught and finished early.

Fury is just a better fighter than Price and he's very confident. Fury has volume, quickness, stamina, chin over Price.
Price has the punchers chance because of his huge right hand but as soon as Tyson gets rough with him Prices' confidence will go out the window.

To sum it up for me, Tyson gets hit, sometimes goes down but he doesn't panic, he will find a way to finish you off.
Price gets hit and you can see the confidence draining away from him and there is no way he's coming back after you.
This was obvious from the Thompson fights as well as amateur days.

So no Price should not go looking for Fury..

No, Fury has never been hurt and in big trouble against an opponent. He has never been close to being stopped.
SteveDow wrote:It is a big if of course and it is equally likely that Price himself could be caught and finished early.
No, it is far more likely that Price would get caught and finished early as he is the far inferior fighter.
