is froch v groves really biggest ever ?
Can't see how this fight is being talked about as the biggest fight ever in Britain, do they just mean in terms of attendance ? It can't be in terms of public awareness there have been much bigger fights than this one such as Lewis v Bruno and Benn v Eubank2 I bet even cooper v burner wasn't far off in terms of the general public being aware of the fight,

The fights you mention were talking points with everyone,i remember how they would be the main talking point during lunch breaks in work, even my nan knew who they were, now though it's hardly mentioned,Froch and Groves to the general public are unknown, some may have heard the names, more so Froch, but i bet very few have seen any of their fights,if it's not free tv at peak times then hardcore fans will pay but not joe public.littlepug wrote:Can't see how this fight is being talked about as the biggest fight ever in Britain, do they just mean in terms of attendance ? But your Granny wouldn't have bought a ticket or PPV. Neither of the fights you've mentioned were sell outs... Everyone goes on about viewing figures but in reality, we had little choice. I used to watch Kabadi and NFL on Ch4 and Cell block h, not because I loved them, there was nothing else on! All those who gob off about the "golden era" but don't watch fights are full of sh!t.bigjack wrote:The fights you mention were talking points with everyone,i remember how they would be the main talking point during lunch breaks in work, even my nan knew who they were, now though it's hardly mentioned,Froch and Groves to the general public are unknown, some may have heard the names, more so Froch, but i bet very few have seen any of their fights,if it's not free tv at peak times then hardcore fans will pay but not joe public.littlepug wrote:Can't see how this fight is being talked about as the biggest fight ever in Britain, do they just mean in terms of attendance ? Estimated 15 million viewing figures. And yet within a short space of time BBC sports execs decided that boxing no longer fitted the public profile, and dropped all boxing coverage including the ABA championships.littlepug wrote:An uncle told me that when mcguigan fought pedroza the country practically came to a standstill !
I am not sure about the opinion that people had to watch as they had little choice. ITV and BBC both built young fighters up then ad Mcguigan for whatever reason really caught the publics imagination as did Frank Bruno. Other fighters didnt such as Joe Bugner, Charlie Magri etc who could never pull in such big viewing figures. Even when Bugner fought Ali I dont think it generated such high numbers-so people where discerning about who and what the watched.

Kabadi was like a game of it. Sumo wrestling was worth a watch too. Hit Man and Her was absolute gash.
Re: is froch v groves really biggest ever ?
I was a young teenager who can remember all of the big fights that were on terrestrial tv Eubank Benn, McGuigan, Bruno
As soon as they went over to Sky which we didn't have in those days, I had no idea of them going on - I can't even remember Bruno v Lewis or Bruno v McCall
Its the same today, my colleague at work who hasn't got Sky and shows a bit of interest in boxing conversation, doesn't know who the UK big names are (maybe Khan)

Will be supported by the highest gate number, value and PPV buys won't it?expe wrote:Edited for youmullenman wrote:it is the biggest fight ever in the UK,,, opinion

Any boxing fan would be better off with B allegedly than SKY imo - SKY sports is expensive if all you watch is boxing.

If you're mate was that bothered, he'd find a way to watch fights. Does he not read papers or go online, either?rossij8 wrote:I was a young teenager who can remember all of the big fights that were on terrestrial tv Eubank Benn, McGuigan, Bruno

He's not a massive boxing fan -if big fights were on domestic tv he may get into itmickey1975 wrote:If you're mate was that bothered, he'd find a way to watch fights. Exactly. They'd watch because nothing else was on, bringing nothing to the table in terms of revenue. Tell him to watch Britains Got Talent instead.

Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks used to get twenty million viewers.
Re: is froch v groves really biggest ever ?
Biggest gate number post war, no idea on PPV buys but it certainly won't beat Hatton-Mayweather, although that was in the US. This isn't the sort of thing that can be determined by numbers though, it's a very subjective thing, all down to opinion really.DMA1987 wrote:Will be supported by the highest gate number, value and PPV buys won't it?expe wrote:Edited for youmullenman wrote:it is the biggest fight ever in the UK,,, opinion

You'd not have imagined there were that many nutters in the country would you? (Catweazle lived in the next village to me).JimJim2009 wrote:Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks used to get twenty million viewers.
Re: is froch v groves really biggest ever ?
that was a massive fight , mcguigan was really liked by everyone it seemed his style was exciting and old women loved him to because he seemed like a nice guy. for me i'd pick the benn vs eubanks II as the biggest fight that might just be that i was at it :)littlepug wrote:An uncle told me that when mcguigan fought pedroza the country practically came to a standstill !

There was loads more to Barry's story. Catholic marrying a Protestant, dad singing in the ring, all at a very volatile time for Ireland. Baz transcended the sport.stevedoc wrote:that was a massive fight , mcguigan was really liked by everyone it seemed his style was exciting and old women loved him to because he seemed like a nice guy. for me i'd pick the benn vs eubanks II as the biggest fight that might just be that i was at it :)littlepug wrote:An uncle told me that when mcguigan fought pedroza the country practically came to a standstill !

Go on then, which ones? Biggest attendance I've been in was Hatton-Lazcano or Calzaghe-Kessler. Fair play to you if you was at Chavez-Haugen.
