Froch comments on Gavin (Paddy) Fitzpatrick

Post by johnswan1 »

A very good interview with Froch from 24 hours after the fight. If I were him I would still feel the same about Groves. Both he and Paddy Fitzpatrick do look stupid now, especially with Paddy's letter to the B of C expressing his concern about Froch's health. It'll be interesting to see if Groves stays with him.

Paddy's record as a pro was 0-5 and stopped three times, including twice in the 1st round. I realise that doesn't mean he can't be a good trainer but I wonder why he changed his name to Paddy. Maybe being Irish it was just what he was known as when he lived in the States?

I'm not surprised he was 0-5. Must be a real hindrance boxing whilst trying to keep a hat on.

He never lost any of those fights they just didn't give him the decision.

The ones he lost by knockout, he was in full control and winning you know ?

I thought Froch was refreshingly classy in the post fight interview and that he didn't need to subsequently goad Groves. Everyone knows what happened. But he has earned the right to react in whatever way he wishes.

He's not a very gracious winner is he, still slating Groves ( doesn't punch any harder than Abraham etc ) you'd think knocking him sparko would leave Carl a bit less pissed off than usual.

Though to be fair, I think all the really top fighters have that level of ruthless spite about them, just some hide it more than others. Joe had it as well.

There was an article in the Guardian on Monday and Froch was happy to describe himself as spiteful, outside of his immediate family and circle of friends I don't imagine he gives a hoot what anyone else thinks of him and wouldn't go out of his way to avoid upsetting someone.

"Though to be fair" sounds like a Froch quote lol, Froch kept telling Groves something about moving on and not harping on about the past i.e the controversial stoppage in the first fight, maybe Froch should move on now and forget Groves or maybe he just can't ? longer terms sports psychology ?

Froch should be happy with Groves 'moaning on' about the controversial stoppage; it gave him the chance to earn his biggest payday in front of a record crowd. The second bout was very decisive.

Often a fighter will big up an opponent he has just beaten. It goes to show how much of a genuine grudge match this became.

Froch in a historical sense owns Groves now following the KO, so anything George achieves from here will only add to Froch's legacy. On that basis it would be in Froch's interests to encourage George to bounce back and enhance his reputation.

But, Groves was extremely disrespectful to Froch prior to both fights in how he constantly ridiculed and cheapened his achievements and fighting style. I can see why Carl is not forgetting that now. Really at 36 years old a loss to the younger Groves should not have impacted Froch's legacy given what he has done in a very tough career, but Groves took advantage of a very public stage and worked hard to belittle everything he had achieved and seemed to have convinced many casuals of the same, that Froch was somehow fortunate and a bit of a phony.

In the end Froch had to win convincingly in order to both preserve his legacy and neutralise the negative impact Groves made on his popularity. All the talk has backfired on Groves in spectacular fashion with that KO and if anything justifies the stoppage in the first fight making the same outcome looking for inevitable than before. The manner of the victory could not be any sweeter for Froch.

Give him a chance it's been 5 days. Judge if he's moved on in a month on two. I'm sure as soon as the Chavez fight is announced, he would've moved on. Can you moved on when you are probably contracted to have post-fight press obligations when they're 100% gonna ask about your previous opponent?

He said a few things about Paddy Fitzpatrick as well, he won fair and square, got the result, proved his point, move on, he still seems hurt by what has gone before.

Froch doesn't give a hoot what the fans think of him. They are just a cash cow which helps him live the life he desires. Therefore he see no reason to act with any class, dignity or respect.

No-one should judge him for that lifestyle choice. It helps make him the fighter he is

Nice interview and I think he comes across well. I have been critical of his technique over the years but his achievements speak for themselves.

I think some of you bitching about Carl's comments in this interview need to watch groves interview from Sunday morning. He wasn't particularly gracious himself so it goes both ways

Good interview and no surprise that he still has a couple of slight digs at his opponent considering it was done the night after. I'd imagine the adrenaline was still pumping and he hadn't really come down from the whole thing yet. He had just watched the fight too.

It is a good point about Groves doing himself no favours in the Gloves are Off programmes. A few people i know were wanting Groves to win before this as they all thought Froch didn't come across too well in the last fight or prior to this being signed but they just thought Groves was a one-trick pony in these programmes.

Groves really needs to have a hard look at himself after these last 2 fights. He puts everything into these mind games now and can't accept any legitimate criticism. To be taken out at similar stages of a fight by someone he doesn't particularly rate show he has major flaws. The stoppage was slightly early in the first one but he was showing signs of struggling with the pace. In the 2nd fight was going at the pace Froch wanted and it looked again like it was too much for him which is why he was forced into making a mistake. There is much more to it than the argument he gives of just switching off.

If he can't see that then he will be in trouble against a lot of other fighters, especially when his 'mind games' prior to fights get laughed off and him being labelled chinny by one and all (rightly or wrongly this will be said).

I think the first stoppage was fair. YES - Froch would have got some leniency from the Ref if it had been him - and he'd possibly have had his head taken off - but Groves was disobeying Boxing's golden rule: Protect yourself at all times. I think Groves was riding the crest of his excellent first performance and once he got that mantra stuck in his head that he'd been somehow robbed he just kept playing it over and over and over again, maybe he believed it....in any event it helped to sell the second fight very handsomely.
The reality of course was that he put up a very good first fight, but came unstuck and ragged as it went on, and lost to the more experienced fighter.

It p*sses me off a little bit because I used to think James Degale was a really likeable chap, then he started acting like a tw*t before the Groves fight.........after Groves beat him people were saying this fella might turn out to be as popular as Henry Cooper! Then in the Froch run up, Groves started shouting his gob off :( . I think he just was instilling some belief into himself to be honest!

I actually thought DeGale had dropped all that Groves sh*t from his persona. I was reading his interview from last week and thinking I might have got him wrong - then I read this near the end:

"...Listen, I'm mature and I've grown. I'm 28 now, a man. Certain things don't bother you. All you care about is doing your job and earning well and your family living well. Your priorities change. The way you think changes. If you really think that ugly mug's going to wind me up, no." (Boxing News).

They all just dent their popularity when they come out with this type of crap. If DeGale genuinely wasn't wound up or affected by Groves's profile shooting through the roof then why talk about him?

I like Froch`s honesty. He calls it how he sees it. Groves wound him up and was annoying as hell on many occassions.

That southern irritating voice and the constant sly digs must have made Froch want to do him there and then.

I don`t begrudge him laying into Groves now that he proved all of his talk was just talk.

George should bitterly regret leaving Booth. He could've (IMO would've) been world champion beating one of the P4P best by now. Fair play to Froch, made him look like he ran out of ideas due to not being able to get under his skin. If Booth was devising the plan, he maybe wouldn't need to have been so petty at times. He wasn't such a dick vs Degail, Booth would've advised him what to say, how to get fans on you side and how to avoid getting KOd on his way to a points win

In an article on Monday (Guardian) Eddie Hearn said that he had gone to see Froch before the bout and reassure him that he would beat Groves. He said that he had told Froch that he had gone there, there and there and beat this man, this man and this man and they were all better than Groves.

Surely that adds credence to what Fitzpatrick and Groves were attempting to do, and did prior to the first bout. If Froch had confidence issues or could be rattled emotionally then that is obviously an aspect that can be attacked/undermined. The fact that Froch seems upset still with it in spite of winning both bouts and earning the best part of 10 million quid in 8 months shows how effective it was and not how idiotic Fitzpatrick and Groves have been.

It wasnt that effective in hindsight though as it was Groves left laying stretched on the canvas with his leg bent underneath him.
