Mate Parlov

How good was he? I know he beat Conteh although I heard it was questionable and from the footage he looked a clever southpaw.

its hard to dream up a more awkward fighter than parlov - credit to him - he developed a way of boxing off the back foot but with a left jab that really stung. his side-on stance gave you nothing much to hit and cause damage to while that jab was forever in your face. however - in this stance he was very well balanced. his height added to the general trickiness - tall enough to use his occasional right over your left. finally he was smart, as tough as old boots and very determined. no wonder he made his mark in the division at that time of very good light heavies.

OH NO!
My TV set or DVD player has gone crazy!
When I watch Mate Parlov he is southpaw and jabs with his right and throws left crosses - He was tricky but a well prepared John Conteh with his mind on the job instead of parties would have won easily.

I watched the fight between Conteh and Parlov and was convinced Conteh won fairly handily. Parlov was a big awkward southpaw, very good amateur and he was also tough SOB. He had hard fights with Camel, Franklin (Saad Muhammed) and Johnson and pushed all of them so was a top quality operator. He turned pro at 27 which in those days was very late.

oops! sorry yes southpaw - I must admit it was a long time since I saw him fight - but stick a mirror in front of him and the post is nearer to being right!

Mate Parlov,

Was a very good boxer, with a sharp right-hand {southpaw style}.

He was big, and tough. He was never regarded as a big puncher, but was calculating and accurate.

Mate Parlov

The Man with the Golden Fist

As of January 7, 1978

* Age; 29 years, 2 months
* Height; 6' 2"
* Reach; 76"
* Stance; Southpaw
* Style; Boxer
* Record; 19-1-1 {9 KO's}
* European Light Heavyweight Champion
* #1 WBC Light Heavyweight

After scoring {5 KO's} in his first 7-Wins, Mate went 12-1-1 {4 KO's} in his next 14-Bouts.

Early career hand injuries {as a result of an abundance of amateur bouts} affected his ability to punch hard
anymore, and he turned more towards a typical European Boxing Style, of chopping right-jabs and counter with a
fast-flash straight left-hand.

Mate was very strong {bull-like}, and added with a southpaw stance and awkward style made him a very
difficult opponent to break through.

Back on May 21, 1977

When Miguel Cuello won the vacant WBC Championship, he was supposed to defend his new Championship
versus Mate Parlov within 90-Days {by August 21, 1977}

Mate Parlov was ranked #1 WBC, and John Conteh {who had been stripped} was ranked #2 WBC.

But, Miguel Cuello kept getting injured in training.

Can you tell me the strengths and weaknesses of Miguel Cuello? His left jab right cross hook uppercut his height and reach his inside leg length and punch power?

The controversy with the Mate Parlov vs. John Conteh Championship Bout.

The WBC President Jose Sulaiman disliked John Conteh and his arrogance. There was no way
John was leaving Belgrade with a Decision win over Mate Parlov in front of 40,000 plus spectators.

The WBC was still pissed off about the way that John had pulled out 3-days before his bout with
#1 WBC-ranked Miguel Cuello back on May 21, 1977. The WBC had wanted to ban John Conteh
for life.

An underrated fighter these days, and often forgotten about... It's shame, he was never going to be the greatest Light Heavyweight of all time, but he was a good fighter in his day. And I could say the same for Slobodan Kacar.

Great amateur careers, better than average professional careers.

Late Fight Analysis

Mate Parlov got off to a good start in Round 10, but both fighters banged heads hard, and Mate's right eye
was cut.

Mate Parlov started to tire badly late in Round 10. John Conteh's left hook to the body took started to take
it's toll on Mate.

Rounds 11 and 12 were very tough for Mate Parlov, as John Conteh's rough-house tactics started to pay off.
John opened up the cut on the corner of Mate's right eye.

In Round 13, both of John Conteh's eyes were starting to swell.

Oh for god's sake. Now we're back to the same old schizophrenic conversations between Duce & his mental ward of alteregos.

This man is banned for vandalising of Boxrec.

I hope some mod does his job and spares us all more of this brutally tedious crap.

Mate Parlov vs. John Conteh

CBS-Television Announcers {Tim Ryan, Angelo Dundee and Gil Clancy}

The announcers called a great fight. They were all very impressed with Mate Parlov's boxing skills
over the first 9 Rounds, where he showed excellent movement and great footwork.

There was a fantastic late fight charge by John Conteh, from late in Round 10 thru Round 15.
