Re: Jeff Merritt vs. Johnny Gause
Before he had his first professional fight at Madison Garden in June 1969.
George Foreman did a sparring/exhibition at Duffey Square on Broadway with former top amateur Forest Ward.
It got so rough and almost out of hand between the two that they had to stop it after the second round.

Jeff Merritt ~ 6-0-0 {5 KO's} ~ 206 lbs.
* Sponsored by the National Maritime Union Hall Athletic Department
* Advisors > Freddlie Lewis, Frank Nesbitt and Joe Labaczewski
vs.
Johnny Gause ~ 3-0-0 {3 KO's} ~ 192 lbs.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The highly touted Jeff Merritt {Age; 21 years, 8 months} was to be showcased in the opening Heavyweight bout,
in a scheduled 4-Round Preliminary.
His opponent, was Johnny Gause, who was a damn good Heavyweight out of the tough gyms in Philadelphia.
Johnny was sent to New York by Philadelphia Fight Promoter - Lou Lucchese.
In front of 9300 fans at Madison Square Garden, Jeff Merritt came out blazing andunloaded with everything he had in
an attempt to score another one of his famous 1st-Round Knockouts.
Johnny Gause took a bombardment in the 1st-Round, but he held tough. In Round 2, Jeff continued to fire away, but he
could not drop the Philly Heavyweight.
By the end of Round 2, Jeff looked arm-weary.
In Round 3, Jeff again opened up with a barrage, but his wide punches started to lack steam. Midway thru the
Round, Jeff was gasping for air.
It was now Johnny Gause who was the bomber. Jeff was exhausted and had no answer on how to hold on
or clinch. Late in the Round, Johnny landed about a half-dozen solid punches on an exhausted Jeff Merritt who went down,
only to be counted out at 2:46 of Round 3.
After the bout, Jeff said he just punched himself out. He forgot how to pace himself, and got caught up in trying to
score a Knockout in front of so many people at Madison Square Garden.
