Tyson Fury vs Tony Thompson (tbc)

Post by Maxsplit »

Thompson sent a tweet last night in the early hours seeming to hint it is happening on Saturday.

If it does the whole event will have been rescued and I could actually see a fair few last minute tickets being sold off the back of The Tiger facing Fury.

Obviously a risk for Fury given his whole camp was preparing for a 6'1 come forward fighter not a 6'5 & 1/2 cagey southpaw.

But equally Thompson cannot be in peak condition to go go 12 rounds against a man 16 years younger than him.

What are everyone elses's thoughts and what do you see happening if it does brilliantly come off?

I don't think Tyson should box, three training camps in less than a year and one(crap bout)? It would be wrong for him to face anyone like Thompson at five days notice.

I was actually going to create a thread lambasting the event organisers for not having a back up opponent for the main event.

Whenever Fury fought Firtha & Pajkic they paid Martin Rogan to be the backup fighter should something unfortunate happen to cause complications for the big fight.

If they do bring Tony Thompson in, it will be nothing short of a masterstroke!

And I really hope they do.

Tyson is a ballsy guy, and he's getting impatient (what with Haye pulling out and now Chisora), I'm predicting that Tyson will take the fight.

I really hope so as I have ringside tickets!

It would improve Fury's ranking with all the organisations surely to beat the guy who stopped Price twice and beat Solis on his own patch?

Tyson should take it he will be ok against Thompson if he keeps behind the jab. As above an understudy should have been in place all along Warren should have known that was the smart thing to do.

X2.

Yesterday's statements ruled out Fury still appearing, but I imagine its all up in the air and full credit to Fwank if he can get Thompson over in time. It is a good match up. His Copperbox show in Feb was falling apart at the seams and he beefed up the card with the Fury's, even though they weren't his fighters. I hope he can produce something similar now, come Saturday night I would rather watch Fury vs Thompson than not.

I thought it's already been said from the promoter that BJS now heads the bill?

I don't see Tyson fighting tbh.

This was the tweet Thompson sent at 01:11am today ...

@tiger_thompson: My magic lies in my peoples ties thanks 4 the support boxing fans @Tyson_Fury u won't have to worry bout me pulling out just u getting ktfo

Seems like something is in the works.

I imagine it would genuinely add more numbers to ticket sales too.

All depends if Chisora's purse was guaranteed regardless of injury? I think Thompson wouldn't fight for less than £50k?

Surely Fury would relish this fight as opposed to another wasted training camp?

is fwank seriously going to pay Fury, the away fighter, to fight Thompson whilst his own investment sits on the sidelines when he could just sit back do nothing and not refund tickets cos they'll be valid for a rearranged date that will never happen. 'cant see it myself

I imagine one issue here is pride on the part of the promoter. There's nothing you can do about a fractured hand but these cancellations are happening a lot, I think he'd be happier for the promotion and for his TV channel - not to mention his standing as a promoter - if he can deliver Fury vs Thompson.

And not just any fight, a fight against a top 10 opponent, which would further cement Fury's status as among the elite of the Heavyweights...

Its a great fight if it comes off at this stage. I will lean towards Fury but his chin worries me, especially given Thompson came over here twice and stopped Price.

Can you imagine what would Fury would say about Price, if he beats Thompson with the fight made on fight week.

I've just checked his ranking, and BoxRec have Thompson way down at 23rd.

Didn't realise that he lost two of his last three.

Martin Rogan talking shit to Thompson aswell which is bizarre. Saying he wont fight fury or he'll get destroyed. Then saying he would kick Thompsons ass aswell which is pretty hilarious.

Rogan has been part of Team Fury for this camp, so not that bizarre.

I don't really get why Thompson is seen as a good opponent, he beat Price a couple of times, credit to him for finding Price's chin, but if you land clean on him there isn't much resistance. Since then he's lost to Pulev and Takam, scraped past Solis who I don't particularly rate anyway and got progressively fatter, I'd be surprised if he was under 20 stone at the moment.

I am a bit confused here with the back up opponent plan. One boxer is 6'9" the other 6'1". So they trained for each other then the fight fell through (in the week leading up) so they meet someone at 6'5" with no preparation?
Also the back up fighter spars a 6'1" fighter in preparation one day then someone 6'9" the day after?
My take is that there would need to be a lot of things to be considered here before any opponent comes over. Whoever is contacted will not want to come cheap, then they will have to be run past Furys team. Then they will need the relevant visas. Pass the boards medical. Etc.
For me if another opponent is found it will be a miracle.

Solis was terrible so not sure how much credit he can get for that win.
Against Takam he was out of shape and looked sluggish.
Think it was Bunce who said Thompson had changed the people in his camp, maybe that's it.

Well Fury certainly didn't melt down and go on a bender last night ... This tweet from Asif Vali suggests a replacement is being sought for Saturday :OhYes:

@asifvali: @Tyson_Fury @peterfury team in gym until we know for 100% we carry on as normal. http://t.co/mZ5sNqumMd

And then a series of photos of Fury working out this morning.

Thoughts?
