MIKE PEREZ (includes spoiler)

Post by Tuan_Jim »

Perez has had three entertaining fights in a row. However he struggled with the underrated Takem at 231 last time, so this time for Jennings in his most important fight he comes in nearly a stone heavier at 242.

He predictably gassed in the second half, and Jennings took the decision thanks to a last round points deduction.

Why is Perez so fat? Why is a 6'0'' heavyweight with a great chin, big punch and fearless demeanor selling himself short by coming in with such mass? I give up on modern heavyweights, they are all mad.

He just hasn't got the stamina to go 12 rounds at a decent pace. Neither has he got the power to stop top level heavyweights in the first 6 when he's most dangerous.

It is frustrating.

At 220 his tank would be totally different and those power shots he throws would be more plentiful.

You have to maximize your existing strengths, not try to manufacture new ones like weighing in the same weight as a colossus. Of course he's going to lack stamina lugging that baggage around.

Very similar to the Takam fight and probably what would've happened had that fight gone 12 as well. Perez was clearly the better fighter when he wasn't gassed, but he doesn't have the conditioning to hold the early leads he builds against solid opponents with good stamina.

Sometimes I can't get my head around how fighters like him and Arreola get so heavy while being professional athletes who train frequently. It's very unprofessional and will hold him back from success he is otherwise capable of.

With a decent diet he could make cruiser and be a real threat at world level but that would require effort and a bit of will power and well.....he's a cuban heavyweight...

He looks like a world beater for the first 5 rounds and then looks like a sparring partner for the remainder of the fight.

Perez like all Cuban pros is a bit of an enigma, who people cant decide is good or awful

Technically he's very sound, knows all the tricks and is tough as old boots with a great pair of whiskers but his dedication and motivation leave a lot to be desired,at novice level he was able to get away with that but stepping up now his lack of fitness is starting to let him down

In both the Takam and Jennings fights he was looking the better boxer by the halfway point but then when his stamina goes he ends up fighting on sheer grit and it ends up being far tougher than it should be and becomes a bit of a mess

I thought it was a bit harsh taking a point off Perez if the 12th however he virtually did nothing in the last half very frustrating.

I was not impressed with the Perez corner work, Surely he should have been told after the fight was beginning to slip away from him to start working
harder dig deep suck it up and throw more punches or you are going to lose this fight and said as if it was meant ,All that standing in the corner trying
to look like Mr cool dose not work for all boxers,At no stage did his trainer tell him in no uncertain way you are throwing this fight away but after the fight found his mouth working
to have a go at the referee pity he did not use it on his boxer and show some real enthusiasm and try and gee his boxer up when things were not going great in the second half
of the fight in which case perez might have done more and won the fight just my opinion.

Lets give Jennings credit. He beat Perez on the inside and showed decent defense. He'll be a handful for most fighters.

& this.

Perez is very talented, & has a great rack. Jennings fights like he is wearing a mic with his trainer explaining how to throw a punch, but he's brave & willing & he's got a very good engine for a modern heavy.

If Stiverne doesn't land the right flush & decapitate him, Jennings will outwork him. Holyfield, however, he most definitely is not, & the dreadnoughts will remain beyond him.

He's a bit like Solis in that he has all the talent in the world (maybe not quite as talented as Solis) but in boxing talent can only take you so far without the discipline. I just think in Cuba they are so poor and live /adhere to such a strict regime that once they get a taste of the "good life" and gave money to spare they can't help themselves.

I don't think he's that fat. A lot of muscle with a bit of excess fat I saw Eddie Chambers having a go about his weight but in the programme about Fury recently when Chambers took his top off to me he looked in worse condition with a flabby midsection.

Being a flabby HW is par for the course these days,im not into the Olubamiwu look or that its just that i think its unprofessional to have love handles as an athlete, unless your a journeyman who takes fights at short notice or i can even accept people like McDermott who are always super fit but just cant lose the gut but fighters like Fury,Chisora and Perez who have proven in the past to look trim but come in good shape once every 5 fights,Del Boy not so much these days

It would be easier to name the trim HW's than the not so trim ones :geek2:

It seems like some fighters get more of a hard time than others.

Perez carries a lot of muscle so is going to look fatter.

I think he's leaner than Chambers, Fury, Chisora until very recently, Tony Thompson, Arreloa etc.

Maybe it's beacause he clearly lacks a bit of fitness, but either way seeing boxers like Chambers giving him loads is hypocritical.

Perez doesn't get criticised for his look though, he gets criticised because his stamina is crap. McDermott may get a bit of banter thrown his way but no-one doubts he can go 12 hard rounds. Perez blows up after 6 so clearly isn't fit for purpose.

Some of the posts above plus what I've seen on Twitter are slating his appearance. But I see what you're saying, if he had a good engine no one would probably mention it.

Boxers like John McDemott baffle me, how can someone that be that out of shape yet box for twelve rounds consistently?! Crazy.

Yeah it's mad. I remember reading an interview McDermott gave to Boxing Monthly, said he trains as hard as anyone out there but just doesn't have a body type where it shows. I guess it must be true, as there's no way he could consistently fight for 12 rounds if he was actually unfit.

There is no body type that results in someone having rolls of fat on their midsection if they train and diet properly. Perez fought mainly at 178 as an amateur and is far heavier than he should be, regardless of how good John McDermott's stamina is.

When people criticize his physique it's not simply a vanity issue. If someone is carrying that much fat and their stamina is regularly poor, there is a very good chance that they aren't training or dieting correctly and could improve their stamina and other qualities if they made changes in those respects. I agree with Graham Houston when he says "Perez too heavy, too much weight to lug around", and do those who think otherwise not believe Perez would be better off at 215 than 242?

As for Jennings, he's solid but that's it. Good punch variety, fights well inside, doesn't get lazy in clinches, and good stamina. He's not particularly fast or hard punching though, and he can be somewhat clumsy and show his very limited amateur experience. He also gets inside just by crouching low and moving forward rather than punching in, and he struggled to get to Perez when the latter wasn't gassed. Against taller opponents I can see him having problems closing the distance.

McDermott defies logic. Londonirish trained with him for a long time and swears he put the hard yards in. Could do 12 easy as well.

Exactly - it's not his appearance that's the issue. It's his obvious lack of stamina and dedication. He's gained 20lbs of fat since his first few years as a pro. That's not due to his "bodytype". I swear do some people on here not even watch the fights?
