Information on a NY Boxer from the 50's

Post by jklissy »

I was told my father was a boxer in NYC so I decided to do some research. I saw his old gear when I was very young and some medals but they are long gone. I found a boxer, Johnny Lissy who fits some of the stories. His brother also fought, Joe Lissy and I believe my grand father also boxed as well as coached. My father passed away several years ago but I would like to verify if he is the Boxer in the Archive. If any knows of any of these boxers please reply with any information.

I found a couple of newspaper references to Johnny Lissy boxing for Lennox Hill A.A. in the golden gloves and later on living in Palisades Park, NJ (June 1952).

Do either of those things ring a bell with regards to you father?

A quick assessment: It looks like your father Johnny had a neighborhood rep, and it being NY City that's saying something. - But it also looks like uncle Joey was a brawler, who couldn't box. - I will keep an eye out for more.

I just wanted to add:

I get a kick out of the article that introduces Joey Archer as Jimmy's little brother. Who ever heard of Jimmy Archer? (This was Joey Archer's 10th fight.)

Joey Archer fought Johnny Lissy a year earlier at St. Nick's Arena (4 PTS;) Archer then fought the younger brother Joey Lissy twice, both to PTS wins.

The Lissy brothers must have been well known in the New York area.
