The Battle for Cinco De Mayo

Post by ReggieDiggs »

Looks like Saul has given word to Oscar he wants the Cinco De Mayo 2015 date for a fight, assuming vs Miguel Cotto which will likely be one of the biggest drawing fights in 2015 & is certainly the biggest fight being proposed & seems doable for 2015 thus far.

Floyd has been doing his Cinco De Mayweather thing several times in recent years, 2007 vs Oscar, 2010 vs Shane, 2012 vs Miguel, 2013 vs Robert & 2014 vs Marcos. He will supposedly keep that schedule in 2015 for his alleged second to last fight.

Can Floyd outsell Saul vs Miguel vs his likely opponents, Amir, Keith, Kell & Danny or will he need to make a bigger fight with a TR fighter like Manny, Tim or even less likely Juan Manuel (II)? Can Floyd put together a bigger card if he ventures out on his own for real this time & GBP puts together a respectable undercard?

Or will Floyd finally take a breather from his active as of late schedule as I believe he's hinted at before & hinted at again during the post fight presser Saturday night & just opt out til September?

I would guess that the only Floyd fight that would beat Canelo/Cotto would be Pac. I predict he skips it and takes Amir later in the year.

As much as I'm no longer really that interested in seeing Money vs Manny - it would still be an intriguing fight.

Can you imagine Canelo vs Cotto and Money vs Manny + stacked undercard that night.

I'd be interested to see which side blinks on that date, because if niether does, they both lose.
Vegas might win, though. Revenue-wise.

Oscar is going to secure the date first, and then Floyd will come in later on and try to Deebo it from him.
I'm curious to see what happens here.
One of the other possibilities is that Golden Boy and Mayweather Promotions co-promote the event, like they did with the Mayweather-Maidana rematch
Canelo has stated that he'll never again be less than the headliner, and Floyd isn't looking to co-headline anything either. They'll most likely never share a card again.

what Floyd needs is these contenders to have a box off

Garcia, Thurman, khan, need to really beat a big name to open a big opportunity and i think FMJ needs to get showtime to really create a stand out opponent for him

i don't think it will happen but Garcia vs Thurman would be the perfect FMJ eliminator. Though Garcia is deserving anyway, a box-off fight will create more buzz

I think Floyd cares about the money too much to risk the potential of not seeing the full benefit of a card had on the same night of a canelo/cotto fight. For what its worth a fight like pac/Floyd could be had on any weekend and makes sales. Who cares if its the Mexican holiday or not. I didn't really listen to floyds post fight interview, what did he say about maybe taking some time off. I will admit that I think now may be a bad time for him to do that considering his age and being so close to the finish line.

If Floyd wants to make the most money in his last two fights, he should fight Manny. One in May and a rematch in September. He has a chance to hopefully shut some fans up...even though it is doubtful because they will find a reason to not give him any credit. Even though it is a few years too late, both are still top welters and it would force Canelo off the date. I don't think a Khan fight would come close to as much revenue, and besides that Khan isn't doing anything other than playing it safe to get the fight.

People keep saying this but I've never seen numbers of Amir's audience or viewers for his fights to suggest it to be true. From my admittedly distant view from the US it seems like Kell is more popular.

Plus, as much as Floyd cries about valuing loyalty, and how the MGM Grand pissed all in Arum's face by refusing to remove the Floyd Maidana 1 posters that were everywhere when Slob was doing his own Top Rank show- If Floyd were to not fight at the MGM, he'd be f*cking them over since they're obviously 100% "Team Floyd" for exclusivity purposes.

Floyd's money is guaranteed. He's not moving off his date unless Showtime forces him too. Canelo vs Cotto will move, it's the smart thing to do, for all parties.

What figures have you seen to suggest that Kell is the bigger draw than Khan, assuming that's what you mean by popular?

I've heard good audience numbers for him. Don't think quite doing Froch numbers but Froch wasn't doing those types of numbers outta the gate either I'd assume.

Brook or Khan VS Floyd does absolute shit numbers in the US.

Brook VS Khan is a huge fight in GB.

Why isn't Brook VS Khan being made?

I'm sure hoping that Khan keeps ducking Brook and then gets denied the Floyd fight again. Guys like Thurman and Porter (even though he lost) have been trying to fight their way to the top. Khan is trying to talk his way there and I can't respect that.

So if it's Cinco de Mayo weekend, Khan has no excuses. :OhYes:

I think Mayweather will take it, especially since Amir's suspect chin could provide Floyd with the KO his recent resume lacks. Mayweather has lost a step, but not enough to fall victim to Khan.[/quote]

Trust me no mexican mex/Americans are gonna watch Floyd fight khan cinco de mayo weekend.

Meaning that shiit will do horrible.

In a nutshell if Floyd ain't fighting a Latino they won't give a Fuuck what he does and Floyd knows this very well too.

Floyd vs D. Garcia would do well on Cinco De Mayo. He is unbeaten, knocked Khan out, and is pretty well known with some good wins.

Canelo is being kind of stupid thinking he is going to take over the date before Floyd retires. He has not even had much past 300K ppv buys on his own so far, and going against a Floyd fight would make it worse than that. Him vs Cotto or GGG may be a different story and even things up though. Maybe that is the plan. (Cotto, not GGG)
Roach will let Cotto fight GGG if GGG comes in at no more than 145. :OhYes:

I think its a solid risk by Saul. Saul has potential monster fights with Miguel, GGG & even Manny (which Oscar & Bob have discussed apparently although I question how seriously that was) now. I highly doubt all happen & I think its a good bet @ best we only see Miguel on the lineup next year & never see Manny on deck, but those are bigger fights than anything Floyd likely is gonna have going on.

I think Saul could easily capture the Mexican holiday's back or even have Floyd take a May hiatus. If I'm HBO I throw Saul vs Miguel on PPV on Cinco De Mayo & I throw Saul vs a decent undefeated guy like Demetrius along with two solid name fighters undercard bouts that get attention & throw that on regular HBO on Mexican independence day. That puts a serious dent in Floyd's numbers best case & worst case I think Floyd loses Cinco De Mayo by PPV numbers or an opt out cuz its a lose/lose situation & his Sept. fight would need to be huge or heavily hyped even for a Floyd fight to make Floyd & Showtime happy with their bank accounts.

Ya'll are trippin' if you think Canelo will be headlining against Floyds PPV on Cinco De Mayo. It's bad for business on both ends and for Showtime. Floyd will get the venue and the Cinco De Mayo date to have his PPV. Now if Fishnets and Alvarez were smart and really wanted to put it to Floyd, they'd schedule their fight before Cinco De Mayo, especially if it's against Cotto, that way people buy that PPV over Floyds because it's happening first (considering a lot of people will only buy 1 or 2 PPVs a year and won't want to fork that kind of money out for 2 PPVs in such a short period of time).
