The welterweight division is one of, if not, THE strongest divisions in boxing, both currently and historically. Some of the biggest names in boxing history have fought there, such as the Sugar Rays, Hearns, Mosley, Whitaker, Duran, Armstrong, De La Hoya, Napoles, Griffith, and Kid Chocolate, just to name a few.
Why do you suppose this is?
The Welterweight division.

Re: The Welterweight division.
Its a numbers game imo. More guys are in that range. When there are more guys around there tends to be more good to great guys around & those guys get to fight each other & thru competitiveness are able to enhance their game even more. Just looking @ the current boxrec numbers there is a range between 131lbs & 154lbs that encompasses 1/3 of the boxers tracked. That said I think that weight range also has the best of both worlds, the big guys can knock you tha f#ck out, the lil guys can box their ass off & the guys in the middle can do both thus the ability to excel there is more well rounded thus it would stand to reason those guys need more attributes to get to the top.
