St Andrews Sporting Club 6/10/14

Post by JamieM »

Just wanted to say well done to Iain Wilson and Colin Bellshaw last night, what an amazing job they done on it, great night, not one complaint and actual value for money, meal good, had Ross Murdoch and charlie Flynn as guests with a funny after meal speaker. Also modernised with clips of the games to show off Ross and charlie, as for fights David savage back and fought well but got a real nasty cut, won on points, gary the mint murray won on points v a decent amateur from
Hull who made debut ands in event mikey towell won points c Kevin mcauley, mikey was really good and got to try out new things , his work rate over 10x3 was excellent and in 10th only round he lost for me easing off to the win, excited to see him in action against scottish fighters at moment, he's still young and although a talent don't wanna see him move up in level yet, why would we when he will never be in a boring fight, learn every fight and when he's ready get him in the ring for a british, can sell a ticket also , sold 35 dinner tickets which is good going! Hope Tommy
Or saltire dabble into dundee as both him and ronnie good sellers ! Both have different fans and atmosphere would be amazing, well done guys

Yeah mate I thought he surely can't keep tempo at that but to his credit he did, I want to see him establish a jab though, work rate is great etc but just think that a lot of his work is spoiled by neglecting the jab, and there needs to be a plan b, him And ronnie really can make a success of a show here, you know aswell as me that when it happened before ronnie couldn't train for having whole
Show on his shoulders, I was driving everywhere dropping tickets off,
If we have both them selling it would work, and genuinly believe that, but it's not me putting money forward ha

Would be great to see them both in big fights in our home city, I only wish there was a decent venue, I hated the ice arena, the caird hall was good tho, theres not really anywhere else, read on john simpsons twitter last night hes thinking of retiring due to not having any fights in the pipeline, would love to see him and ronnie battle it out, and michael give the boyo a rematch, forgot his name, reckons the ref stopped it too early, ref done him a favour if you ask me

The big problem with anyone wanting to run a show in Dundee is that there isn't any proven success in running the shows!! (Didn't Tony Lindie always claim he lost money!!) I hope that they do take a chance on it though because it could become a great place to hold extra shows for other fighters and get teh local boys exposure in their home town. You have Jamie Wilson, Mike Towell and Ronnie Clark from Dundee. Matty McAllister, Darren Traynor could sell loads for a show only an hour away and George Thomson and James Thomson from Stirling that is close enough to sell tickets for!!

I'm sure that if you put on 5 or 6 of those guys in a show there it would be a success and a great show too!!

I was speaking to Davie Drummond today he hasnt had a fight in donkeys and still has nothing lined up,he's going away back through Fife to start training wth Stevie McGuire again, must be frustrating as hell trying to get fights and the ones that he does have scheduled keep getting binned

I agree in regards to Davie Drummond, who is his manager now? Tommy Gilmour? I would have thought if it is he would be getting fights. He is another that could box on a show in Dundee!!

The show in Dundee was crap cause it wasn't promoted right, me and David had to try get sponsors while I had to sell barrels of tixkets to even get it on, while we don't mind helping I want nothing to do with promoting and only want to help ronnie sell tickets, also the other dundee fighters didn't pull weight, I like them all but jamie wilson sold a decent amount of tickets around about 70 while arran mckelvie and Davie Drummond according to Tony sold about 20, mikey towell has a good fan base aswell as ronnie, both have different fans too, jamie wilson is becoming better known now , I'd go with them 3, matty Mcallister, aberdeen, john Thain in Edinburgh an hour away and is a massive seller and possibly one of the Stirling boys, they promotor it right it will be a success

agree with jamie.if the dundee lads got put in with decent opponents instead of journeymen and mismatches,it would definetly be a success,no offence to tony lindie but those two shows in dundee were a shambles, jamie and david along with ronnie who was supposed to be preparing for his bouts were left to do everything in regards to advertising and selling tickets, weve got two or three top boxers from dundee just now,all we need is someone with experience in promoting to get involved

Saltire Promotions should get with Morrisson Promotions and this for me would be an awesome show and amazing for Boxing in an All Scottish Title fight night!

Jamie Wilson vs Scott Allan

Darren Traynor vs John Slowey

Ronnie Clark vs Michael Roberts

Matty Mcallister vs Craig Kelly

Mikey Towell vs Rhys Pagan

Every fight on the card could be a Scottish title fight! Would be in with a big chance at tv if Eddie Hearn had the chance! ;)

Let's get it all planned :)

Dundee's problem is lack of venues.. Only way to make money in Dundee is dinner show. Or go big. If I was to put a show on in Dundee I would go to the Ice Arena. It holds a lot more than the Caird Hall and they are more or less the same price. If I remember right capacity of 4000 whereas 2300 at the Caird Hall. I think this is something where ticket pricing is important.. £20 for an adult is cheap for boxing and around the price of Football and Ice Hockey which sell well.. Also getting the local media involved. I think a show with fights like below

Co Main Event
Ronnie Clark v Kris Hughes(Scottish Title)
Mikey Towell v Craig Kelly (Scottish Title)

Undercard
Darren Traynor v Dave Savage
Jamie Wilson v Scott Gladwin
Mathew Mcallister v Rhys Pagan
Davie Drummond v Scot Edgar
George Thomson v TBA
James Thomson v TBA

All those fights are possible they wouldnt break the bank and all very competitive. With the right promotion and given a few months to run at it I think could sell 2000 + tickets.. I said to Tony so many times to do projections of how much he expects to make from the show.. Profit and loss. Planned the right way Dundee is very untapped

I hope a bill or 2 can be made up in dundee esp with towell and ronnie. Bot have a good number of fans and im sure with teh right investment and as others have mentioned we have the aberdeen guys etc who are close enough too.

I like your enthusiasm but imo it wouldn't work out financially unless you could get a few big sponsors!! 2000 tickets at £20 is £40,00, that sound a lot but try breaking it down to include the cost of the arena £5000, all of the fighters wages, expenses for the fighters including hotels etc, referee, judges, inspectors, doctors and medical staffs, security and also the advertising of the show etc. It's amazing where the money goes once you start adding up all of these expenses and you would realise you have blown all the money and you still haven't paid for everything!!But it would be a cracking show!! haha

I done a profit and loss for the last show for Tony just to show him how to do it. For similar show as I put I had it down as £32k and odd including the money to the board.. Had worked out a profit of over £7k.. I know what your saying £32k to run a show is a big risk but the rewards are there for someone.. I got a deal with local radio company for 10% of ticket sales for prime time advertising that was a great deal for that kind of advertising.. I think with using the ice arena and giving away some tickets to local schools will fill out the venue as well as selling extra tickets to their families..

I understand what you are saying but we have run loads of shows and it's much easier to sell them on paper than it is when you actually try to sell them for real. Demands are much higher, boxers usually get a % of ticket sales. We used our local radio station for a couple of shows and even with the add running everyday the actual amount sold off the back of the advertising was very much less than we had projected. So much so that we haven't bothered with it since!!

The hardest part of selling the boxing shows are the first couple, most of our shows are now sold on repeat business because we put on good shows and people want to come back. I hope that shows can be run in Dundee but I just worry that the person that would run the show would like someone in the city that can take the pressure off for the selling of the tickets and setting up the show or someone deciding to actually put their money in to get started to see if they can make it work. trust me you don't always make money at these shows and you are glad to just break even!!

Very true. I loved boxing in my local town, but also hated it. As the main ticket seller all is on you to make the show work for all involved. Here's a funny true story, Ryan Brawley just won prizefighter. I broke my back selling tickets for that, show on a Tue night. Packed The place, n tommy said to Ryan, when going to pick up his winnings. That he didn't sell enough tickets for it, pmsl. Mind that he's just won 25k, n Tommy wiz due his 25%. Good old Tommmy,
