Artur Beterbiev

Post by El Raincoat »

Beterbiev has been highly impressive so far, notably against Tavoris Cloud last time out.

I know he had a big amateur record but does anyone know what his record was in the amateur's? I know I maybe should be on the amateur page but thought might get more traction here. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't find any information on his amateur fight counts, but he had a long and relatively successful career: European champion in 2006 and 2010, world champion in 2009. He was robbed in 2008 Beijing Olympics where judges were giving points to his Chinese opponent when Artur was landing his punches. In 2011, he moved up in weight which was a mistake, because he ran into Usyk both in 2011 world championship and 2012 olympics and lost both times.

I was hoping Showtime will pick him as an opponent for Stevenson.

Interesting! Was this simply because Usyk is the bigger man or is he regarded as better all round?

They were both close fights. Artur was actually the stronger guy, which is crazy considering Usyk is a big CW, dropping Usyk with a body shot, but Usyk recovered and did some great boxing to win. Great matchup.

Beterbiev said that he was fighting at 84 kg (185 pounds), while the weight class was 91 kg (200 pounds). The previous weight class is 81 kg (178 pounds), so he could make it.

He and Kovalev know each other for about 10 years and quite often they were sparring partners in the Russian national team camps.
