Matchroom Scotland

Post by DazDiCanio »

Stephen Simmons has posted he's fighting in February in Glasgow.

Pleased to see Matchroom hasn't abandoned us loyal Scots fans. Hope they put Willie Limmonds fight back a couple weeks, seems odd him fighting in Manchester in January when there's a Glasgow gig a month later.

Ricky Burns/Michael Roberts/Scott Allan be the usual suspects for an undercard I imagine.

That pretty much couldn't be further away. Good effort though.

Surely a fight with Joe Ham and Chris P Bacon would sell well if only for the pork related puns. Some might expect me to contribute but it's snout my style.

I don't think Matchroom will ever pull out of Scotland completely but without Ricky's world title and the lack of other boxers fighting for major titles I think we will have to get used to only 1 maybe 2 shows per year up here unless one of the new faces that have turned pro can catch the imagination like Luke Campbell has done in hull. Charlie Flynn comes across well and Josh Taylor if he decides to turn pro he also comes across well and could maybe get a following behind them.

Or Tommy works with them to get our fighters some much needed coverage. Bigger profiles mean bigger shows and easier to put on for the likes of you/Lee, mate.

Eddie should be moving Simmons and Brophy on next year these guys are the top boys for the next few years until the likes of Flynn, Black, Ham and others make there stamp in the pro game.
I'm not including Tommy Gilmour and Paul Graham's fighters purely has of yet they've not been invoked lately in Matchroom shows

it would be good for boxing but business people want to look after there interest don't they, I don't stop me helping other promoters fighters with sparring ect we should all help each other but some people think they are better than others and are very fickle

:TU: Exactly, everyone's got the same goals, try and get as far as they can in this game,it must be frustrating when you see potential match ups between your guys and theirs, fights where you feel your man will benefit, fights that would sell and give great exposure which is what we need

I bet most men in Scotland can tell you more members of Dumbarton FC's squad than current Scottish boxers

Morrison was talking about Limond having a tune up in December before fighting for a European belt in February, but Hearn didn't mention anything about Scotland when listing future dates in an interview he did with Kugan in Dublin recently

Agree Billy, I said after the Camacho fight Eddie had dropped the ball by not keeping Stevie moving when he was hot and in the news. A nothing fight in Leeds was pointless.
Don't know why Hearn doesn't put in a smaller venue Edinburgh show.
Craig McEwan desperate for fights too.

Go and somebody put Scotland back on the boxing map, please, thanks :TU:

Scotland are in need of a top fighter coming through to get the support going, or at least a crowd favourite (like Josh Warrington)

For all that Ricky Burns achieved, he was exposed quite badly when he started stepping away from the Warren treadmill of hopeless challengers.

A huge rid heided heavyweight is what they need. Some clubbing meatball to get the pulse going.

Pretty low on top fighters/prospects up there at the minute.

Gary Cornish has a decent fan base, but with zero amateur background his road to anything big will be a long one.
I imagine that's why he's not getting big media coverage for now.

I just wish that Tommy and Alex would get there heads together and promote big shows, I'm positive they did it in the past but maybe someone on here can verify that?

If they could put aside differences and try doing whats best for their fighters? Put the Scottish title fights out to purse bids and let all of the promoters bid on the fights, if you lose the purse bids then your fighter might be on another show but he will be getting paid more anyway!!

Either that or Alex/Tommy put on a massive event where there could be big fights from both promotions selling out a massive arena and creating a buzz for Scottish boxing again because imo there isn't much at the moment to tempt the big promotions from happening here.

At the end of the day the only way our fighters will get the big fights and the experience to fight and win titles is by testing themselves and who doesn't want to be champion of their country? Then they can look towards British Title honours, but if you can't beat the Scottish Champion then are you realistically going to successfully win the British Title?

Davie, I was at the last matchroom show at Braehead and the place emptied after Willie smashed Curtis. Willie could well have been getting regular fights on Scottish shows if somebody had the balls to front them.
I know Tommy has got him good fights but when he won the Commonwealth he should have gone on. Now he has the British he's fighting in the away corner! Crazy, mate. Just nonsense from a fans point of view. What's even more ridiculous is he vacates his belt to a promoter who he isn't signed too! He could well be fighting for that belt again as the away fighter. How is that beneficial for Willie?
We don't need Burns to have shows in Scotland, plenty lads with decent followings to fill out medium sized venues.
Limmond/Cornish/Clark/Traynor/Matty would fill any venue in Scotland. Also, guys like Boxing Evolution are more than willing to come up and broadcast it live.
I've spoken to Lee about this briefly, it's the new media platform and they don't cost much. Great way to get our fighters out to a wider audience. Online streaming gives you an unlimited audience.
There's so much more than can be done imo.
I'm just a guy on the street but there's 1000s like me willing to support the country's boxing, just needs somebody to take up the challenge.

That sounds good mate and I'd like to hear more but on the flip side of that, if it is being streamed live then could that have an effect on ticket sales? If the streaming is free then someone could watch the show from say Dundee and watch Matty or Darren without buying a ticket and putting anything into the show that is being run?

That could well be the case or it could not lol Can be compared to any sport i imagine. The fans these fighters already have will always buy tickets, I've no doubt about that. What i would hope the coverage would do is bring in new fans.
If it had gone ahead for the the last beach ballroom gig people would be talking about the atmosphere for a long time haha

I do agree to an extent but when one of the big things for a fighter is making sure his fan base will travel to help him get fights, when he needs to sell x amount of tickets then it can be easier for the ones who struggle to buy the tickets to miss out on fights if they can watch them free. It can then hurt the fighters and the promoters if numbers fall. It doesn't affect the likes of Sky shows because there is a pot of money available to put the shows on so even if you lose a few hundred seats everybody still gets paid properly without the fear of the show losing you money.

One thing I do know about is ticket sales, I can talk regarding ronnies, for his last fight it was a struggle to sell tickets, ronnie has a set fans base of 100 I'd say for away fights, ronnie sold around 400-500 for dundee as he sold pretty much every ticket that was bought bar 70 from jamie wilson in caird hall! Problem is that when the opponent isn't named he struggles big time, and usually when its a Latvian name o or whatever they all think it's a walkover, biggest fight for Ronald would be Michael Roberts in dundee, everyone knows how long it's been talked of and his name is just well known within dundee due to it being a decent fight, aberdeen was a decent night but problem was the price went up and think less fights, and not as good fights ,
