Does anyone agree with me?

Post by Mimmy »

Reflecting on the BJS v Jr fight last night I am staggered by the corner that is supposed to help a boxer recover and replenish after each round. Eubank Sr didnt help matters I got the impression the was more interested in himself when he was in the ring during rounds. For the first few rounds he seemed to relish the limelight of himdself there, pulling at his coat cuffs and soaking in the crowd, it was as if he was still on show after all these years. Ronnie Davies didnt speak! What impression were they giving to Jr, Sr, for example, 'sit with your legs bent' Sr should have been more interested in what his son wasnt doing for the first 4 or 5 rounds. It was a shambollick display by the corner. Why wasnt Ronnie in charge, slapping Jr like he did with Sr? I just dont get why there was no cause for concern in the first 5 rounds? At the end I did hear Ronnie tell Jr that he had to stop BJS to get a victory. He should have been doing this after 2 rounds. A trainer is paid to train a boxer, but also develop a plan how to beat his opponent. The other corner were sound, Tibbs was doing a great communication job.

BJS is not much better than Jr after what ive seen, he is beatable and I think Jr could have beaten him if he was directed in the right way. Lack of support and a father who was taking the limelight cost Jr in my opinion.

Jr needs to get rid of Davies and certainly get shot of his dad in the corner. He needs a professional outfit not the kind that is living off memories and future contenders.

If Jr had come out with intent he could have beaten Billy I think Jr needed maybe another 3 rounds, saying that he had those 3 rounds early on. I think on the night Jr gave his best with the tools he had, unfortunately the tools where not sharp enough and the guys who where there to back him up just sat there like a couple of twats!

Agree with a lot of this.

Eubank Jr has potential but it is unlikely he will fulfill it with the current team dynamic around him.

I agree with everything you've said.

Junior's lack of urgency in the first half reminded me of his father at times.

Senior could be like that in certain contests & it was frustrating to watch; in fact, he lost to Carl Thompson because he didn't press home an advantage & allowed Carl to recover & stop him.

Junior needs to go back to the drawing board, otherwise he is going to lose more than he ought to.

I assumed the sit down and bend your legs comment was referring to sitting down on punches not the stool...

Yeah I think he meant sit on your punches.I heard Senior tell Ronnie to stop talking at one point to which Ronnie snapped back "don't tell me to be quiet". it was all a bit sad to watch and disrespectful to his son and two of the best trainers in boxing.I just can't understand it to be honest,it was a mess.

I think Junior was counting on his power but Billy Joe showed a fantastic chin quite a few times.I think its been missed a bit but we learnt so much more about Saunders last night aswell.

Eubank has been nowhere near Saunders level. I don't think he gave a bad account of himself.
I can understand the argument against the way Snr deals with the corner, but I think he is trying to keep it calm in there. Whereas Ronnie is abit more of a shouting and balling type.

Eubank jnr will grow from that defeat...

Eubank jnr at one point said to Davies "I heard you. Stop talking" that seemed off to me.

Agree 100%, the corner did nothing to address Eubanks listless approach early on. Maybe everyone involved with Eubank assumed that he had the power to stop Saunders, and that this was almost an inevitability to them. If so, obviously a huge tactical error. Eubank did well though, considering the gulf in experience.

Thought Saunders was a bit wary of Eubank's power at times, especially when he overbalanced and fell in, he was there to be picked off and Billy Joe kept letting him get away with it, don't know whether he was worried about over committing and Eubank Jr swinging an uppercut from somewhere around his knees and walking onto it, or if he was just sticking to the game plan and playing it safe, but I expected him to punish Eubank Jr more for the mistakes he was making.

Eubank didn't so much lose the fight as give it away; Ronnie didn't say a word for 7 rounds! And when he did he was told 'Stop Talking' How disrespectful was Eubank Jnr FFS. Thankfully Ronnie did keep talking and from then on gave a little bit of good advice; truth is Ronnie should have given Jnr a good slap in the face by round 4 and spoken a lot more. IMHO Ronnie got the most out os Snr by doing this and Chris Eubank would not have had the career he did was it not for Ronnie. Jnr needs to learn a little respect and listen to his trainer and not his father who lets be honest would attend the opening of an envelope if he thought someone would ask for an autograph. The only good to come out of it is that Jnr is better than a lot of people thought but not as good as he thought he was; he was gracious in defeat at least. It is a fight I would watch again and BJS was shown to be not as good as a lot of people thought he was. A great learning fight for both of them.

Im sure a lot of blokes my age who has seen the start and conclusion of Eubank Sr in the ring was having a rerun if you like the the good ole days. I know lots have said things about Jr and most have come true on fight night but I think I had a second coming in my thoughts with the progression of Jr, im sure he will come back stronger but he aint no Sr. Those days have gone!

Spot on mate, I was impressed with Jr but he needs to become his own man this defeat could be a blessing in disguise hopefully he will now realise he NEEDS a trainer. I think towards the end he was listening to what Ronnie had to say but by then his old man had already cost him the fight

Corner work was a disgrace and a poor advertisement for boxing, but we all knew that was how it was going to be in there. Eubank jr has already said he doesn't need advice in the corner and that is the way they want to do things. Its all about marketing with these guys, nothing else. I still don't think he's much of a talent because he cant put rounds in the bank with his boxing skills. Its always going to hurt him going forward. He won his rounds through his fitness and aggression, not his boxing skills. I thought the fight being competitive in the second half was more to do with BJS not having the engine to do 12 busy rounds than anything else. BJS is a cut above Eubank and would beat him 9/10 times for me, but I don't think either man is going to be a force on the world scene. BJS might pick up a vacant title somewhere along the way, but right now he isn't good enough to hold onto a title.

Gotta be honest, I enjoyed Eubank Jr's effort and will tune into his next fight 100%

Glad Billy won though, it needed to happen for a host of reasons - plus he's always struck me as someone who makes no apologies for what he thinks or says, pretty honest lad who looks to wear his heart on his sleeve.

BJS has effective skills and a very decent beard too.

Yep agreed,Saunders has won me over as a new fan after this fight.I had him down as a bit of a gobshite and I underestimated what a good fighter he is aswell.

People saying BJS wasn't very good must be joking

He was the smaller man and boxed superbly with a really good chin

Eubank Jr wasn't bad either tbf - he did look a bit clumsy at times with his punches missing (good defensive work by BJS some of the time) and footwork wasn't great

If he hadn't such a sheltered career to date he may have had enough to win - but the jump up in 3 levels turned out to be the difference

Bjs is going no where he's firmly domestic level Mark my words.this will be a wake up call for Eubanks he has the greater talent and tools, even though I felt he won last night.

In future years I'll bump this thread and will have been proven right.

Bsj isn't even Macklin level .

I agree with the Tibbs bit. I disagree with all the rest. Like a lot of lads who are not as good as there Dads were - Ronald Hearns, Ross Minter, George Foreman's lad......sh*t I thought I had a couple more there - but you get the picture - Chris Jr is in the family business. Although I wasn't that impressed with what his Dad had on - (hey at least he had fcking sleeves this time unlike when he rocked up in Newcastle this year) his Dad was posturing and basically saying "Look, Team Eubank is in town and we're gonna pull this off!".
He ain't gonna stand there and dither about in the corner. I thought he gave his son's fight due deference.

I also think the pair of them knew that he was in there with a dominant British champion and making a significant step up in class and as such they weren't that surprised he was getting outboxed and they didn't wanna bollock him or ruin his confidence by screaming at him after round 1.

There's also a bit of a thing going on there in that Ronnie Davies (I hope I'm getting his name right) is not Chris Jr's Dad and nor has he fought a dozen world title fights, and doesn't possess the same experience Chris has to pass on. Does Ronnie even work full time in the game any more after Chris Snr retired? I thought they juggled the whole thing fine and the best man won on the night.

I also think Eubank Jr is looking a lot better than he was when I've caught him on C5 in the last couple of years and I reckon he is gonna improve still further too.

IBF Middleweight champion is Jermain Taylor, Surely at this stage BJS can pick up that title...
