I'm doing a bit of research on 70's California heavyweight Howard Smith. According to BoxRec, his March 13, 1974 bout against Tony Doyle happened at the Civic Auditorium in Stockton, CA. However, a UPI article says the fight happened in Tokyo.

Another later article also quotes Smith saying something like, "I had to defend my California title in Tokyo because nobody would fight me here."

I'm especially curious because a previous researcher seemed to nail down not only the city but the venue when placing the fight in Stockton.

An unlikely location, but apparently correct. The bout was incorrectly attributed to a card held a day later at Stockton's Civic Auditorium.

^^ Ah, that explains the Stockton listing. Stockton certainly seems more likely for a California title defense than Tokyo! Thanks for fixing it.
