Mike Tyson vs James "Quick" Tillis: How Do You Scored It?

Post by elmersalsa »

I just saw the great Mike Tyson's fight with contender James "Quick" Tillis. Tillis fought gallantly and gave a good account of himself. He gave Iron Mike problems. I think the knockdown was the SMALL DIFFERENCE in the fight, even though, Tillis was winning that round, which was round 4. I had it 97-96 for Tyson with 4 rounds to 3 and 3 even. I cannot believe that Tyson was just 19 years old in that fight! Wow! Time flies!

How do you scored it?

I had Tyson up by two rounds, but it was a close fight.

It is hard to believe that Tyson was 19 years old; he was amazing at that age.

Tyson won the fight but it was a close one. Tillis proved that he could fight at world level when dedicated.

Tyson said in his book that Tillis gave him such a body beating that it was the only time he felt so much pain after a fight.

Tillis gave it to Iron Mike that's for sure.

Is it me or is Tillis a really underrated puncher? The men he hurt, rattled or decked in the 1980s make for quite a scary looking gang.

Tillis had fought loads of times at world level before he fought Tyson, and indeed against guys who either were or were to become world champions, as well as top contendors.
People like Mike Weaver, Earnie Shavers, Pinklon Thomas, Greg Page, Tim Witherspoon, Carl Williams, Marvis Frazier, Gerrie Coetzee, Tyrell Biggs...
He generally aquitted himself well. He floored Page, and Frazier was given an 8 count.

I thought it was established that his wasn't a dedication issue, but an allergy issue?
I might be wrong on that though.

He pushed Page down, but he probably gave Greg the best fight of his career at that point.
