What Inspired the Ali Act?
What Inspired the Ali Act?
I am not familiar with this piece of legislation and I was wondering if someone could give me a little background. What inspired this bill? Why is Ali's name attached to it? Etc.

I seem to remember that senator john mccain was a boxing fan and Was Instrumental in developing it.Jpreisser wrote:I am not familiar with this piece of legislation and I was wondering if someone could give me a little background. What inspired this bill? Why is Ali's name attached to it? Etc.

lol, I was just having this conversation with my brother. He just told me it was a way testimonial to him. But that doesn't make sense to me. You pay your respects to a boxer by putting his name on some law-act?

The logic behind the bill was if ALL fighters had to have ID's then their whereabouts, fights, etc. could be tracked down and one could see how often they won, lost, etc. and therefore could determine who had to be suspended, etc. which born the Federal ID. They attached Ali's name to this bill, because they guilted the federal government into believing this measure would in some way prevent fighters from ending up like Ali with Parkinson's.Jpreisser wrote:I am not familiar with this piece of legislation and I was wondering if someone could give me a little background. Prior to this... no one was exactly sure how many fights someone done. Take for example, Bruce Strauss (or Frankie Hines or Donnie Pendelton or Reggie Strickland, etc) who claimed he had over 200 fights as a pro but the "records" only show him fighting 40+ times.
